Persia Walker - Darkness and the Devil Behind Me - (book excerpt)
- The devil claimed Esther Todd. Or so they say. In December
1923, she was a lovely young pianist, a rising star. By January
of '24, she was on the most wanted list. She'd vanished along
the snowy streets of a storm-swept night in Harlem and thieves
had hit the home of her society patron, pulling off a
million-dollar heist. Were the disappearance and robbery
coincidence or conspiracy? Somebody knew, but nobody was
talking. Three years later, the puzzles remained unsolved.
Crime reporter Lanie Price covered the initial case. Now
a frustrated gossip columnist, she's ready for a change.
It comes in the form of Esther's sister, Ruth. Desperate
for closure, Ruth begs Lanie to dedicate her Christmas column
to the case. maybe someone, somewhere will remember something.
Seeking fresh material, Lanie starts asking hard questions,
dangerous questions, the kind just about guaranteed to get
her killed.

3) DA CYBER CHRONICLES

In episode #11 of Everything's Gonna Be Alright: Clemson comes
clean with Tre about Brady, and Cassie - while wondering what's
behind her husband's explosive confrontation with Clemson - meets
a man at work who wants to take her out...

NOW, in episode #12: Clemson and Cadu hang out for a little
sisterly bonding about the men in their lives..

::Excerpt::

A sad spell moved across Clemson’s face as she reached for her
fork and took another taste. “Just when things were starting to
look hot between me and Tre, Kat calls and he runs out after her.”

“Damn.” Caduceus began to dig into her plate.

“My sentiments exactly,” Clemson said, as they both began to eat.

After several minutes of peaceful eating, Clemson’s eyes shot up
towards Caduceus. “Oh,” she said, her voice in a whisper. “I
didn’t tell you the most crazy thing.”

“And what would that be?”

“Nothing serious, just that Tre told me he loved me.”

Caduceus fork hit her plate. Clemson would have laughed at the
open mouth look Caduceus had, if the situation wasn't so serious.

“You are lying to me, girl,” Caduceus said.

“If I’m lying I’m crying, and you can see there are no tears
falling.”

“When did he say this? What did you say?”

“It was last night, as he was leaving. He kissed me and told me
that he loved me.”

Caduceus’ right hand fell to her heart as she just about swooned
back into her seat. “And what did you say?”

“I didn’t say anything,” Clemson said. “I really didn’t get a
chance. He said it and left and I was just sitting on the floor
in disbelief.”

“Wow,” was all Caduceus could muster.

“I know, right? But I don’t know if I believe him.”

“What?” Caduceus asked, incredulous. “You know men don’t use that
word loosely.”

“I know, but he could have been saying it to pacify me because he
left to help Kat out.”

“I highly doubt that,” Caduceus said.

“Whatever the case, all I know is that he said it and now he’s
at the house with Kat fawning all over him.”

“Well, we’ll just have to get your butt back soon so you can watch
yo’ man.”

4) THE POETRY CORNER

TNC has always provided itself in showcasing talented poets, and
this issue is no different. We give MAD PROPS and LOVE to one
of our fave poets, LATORIAL FAISON, who is our Winter 2008
Spotlight Poet.

When asked WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO WRITE, Latorial replied:

Life inspires me. Every single day, every single thing that
happens in my life and our world inspires me to take to the words,
phrases and syncopation of poetry. I write about my own experiences
as well as those world class shots and images of what's happening
in our world every day. From war and politics to communities,
schools and relationships . . . I am captivated by what does and
does not happen in the world. I am inspired to write to promote

awareness. I write to take a stand. I write to inform. I write
to persuade. I write to encourage. I write to ignite and to
inspire. I write for so many reasons, but it call comes back to
that one word . . . life. If I write about Hurricane Katrina,
that's life. If I write about politicians, pimping or babies
having babies, that's life. I don't know how to write any other

experience, and I get the feeling that I help, even if just a
little bit, to make the world a better place. I seek to enlighten
and to open blind eyes to so many things. But the truth of the
matter is that I write life.
