BOOK RELEASE: The Watchers-Knight of Light by Deirdra Eden

[Purchase your copy from Amazon today!]

All the training in Heaven couldn't prepare me for the war on earth, nor for the love, loss, or loneliness humans feel. There are things worse than death, and every last one of them is hunting people like us. Even though we all feel human at times, we must remember, we are not them, we are their watchers.

In England, 1270 A.D., Auriella (pronounced yurr-ee-ella) flees her village after being accused of witchcraft. Pursued by nightmarish creatures, she struggles to accept the truth about her humanity. Filled with fairies, dwarves, pixies, dragons, demons, and monsters, Knight of Light is an enthralling tale that will capture the imaginations of readers young and old.

The Watchers Series; has been described as Braveheart meets Supernatural. The mythology for the series is based on many theological texts from dozens of sects with correlating themes. Ancient writings include the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Traditional Apocrypha, the Pearl of Great Price and the Kabbalah. The Watchers are supernatural beings in human form whose duty it is to protect and guard mankind from the armies of darkness. Unfortunately, as the Book of Enoch mentions, some of these Watchers go bad.

Although the mythology is based on these texts, Deirdra Eden's; The Watcher's Series; is written in a traditional fairytale style with a young girl's discovery of incredible, but dangerous powers within herself, a cast of humorous side-kicks, a quest for greater self-discovery and purpose, and villains of epic proportions.

My goal in writing is to saturate my books with intrigue, mystery, romance, and plot twists that will keep my readers in suspense. I want to see fingerprints on the front and back covers where readers have gripped the novel with white knuckles!

Aside from writing, I enjoy jousting in arenas, planning invasions, horseback riding through open meadows, swimming in the ocean, hiking up mountains, camping in cool shady woods, climbing trees barefoot, and going on adventures.

Coming Soon: Quiver of the Pure Heart by Burnita Bluitt

Granddaughter of a loving, but roguish businessman, Blis Dumas can’t escape a legacy of lies. The time is 1989. The place is San Francisco, where painful stories of gentrification, eviction and relocation still echo within its limits. Clinging desperately to the Victorian home she inherited, she is confronted by a stranger that brings her a life filled with revenge, corruption, and murder. In an unparalleled twist of fate, she discovers that her predicament may have roots buried much closer to home.

Blis’ world starts to crumble as she fights the Bureau to save the home she adores; fights the temptation of an incorrigible former lover; and fights the perils threatening the tender passion of a new budding romance. QUIVER OF THE PURE HEART will appeal to readers that appreciate a social setting that illuminates the universal themes of desire, forgiveness, revenge, and letting go.

San Francisco is one of the loves of Blis’ life, and like any love relationship, it is where her emotions will be tested, where romance will live and die, and where people are not always as they seem. Burnita Bluitt offers a spirited and passionate story of love and corruption in the city by the bay.

The book will be released September 17, and it will be available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and iTunes. Stay close to Burnita's website to receive up to date information on the book's release!

Did I hear someone say travel? When I’m not tethered to my laptop, you can find me somewhere in the wind. I love a post card landscape and the opportunity to experience other cultures, but the beautiful and foggy San Francisco Bay Area will always be my home. However, a winning Powerball ticket might convince me to spend a great deal of time somewhere else like St. Lucia or the South Pacific. When I’m not writing, you can find me immersed in history books or watching a documentary. I also satisfy my insatiable desire for watching romantic comedies and mysteries by finding a seat in a dark Cineplex with a big bucket of movie popcorn, no butter please.

My debut novel’s title, Quiver of the Pure Heart, is inspired by Buddhist scripture. When pain has touched our lives and we can respond with compassion, it is known as a “quivering of the pure heart.” Surviving the pain helps “us to awaken to the greatness of our heart.”*

Born in Mississippi, but raised in San Francisco. As a child I once lived in an Italianate Victorian similar to the one I’ve written about, only it was solid white. I used to like to sit in the bay windows and watch San Francisco pass by. Through writing the book, I’ve reignited my passion for San Francisco’s rich architecture. [website | Facebook | Twitter]

Do you feel like your background or upbringing influences your writing style? If so, in what way(s)?
Yes it did.  The idea came from the stories my grandmother told me about her grandmother’s quick departure from the war-torn  kingdom of Dahomey (present day Republic of Benin).  I was inspired by her will to survive.  It inspired me personally because it proved that anyone of us can overcome challenges, no matter how difficult they are.  The events that occurred in the heroine’s (Amelia) life are a mixture of true events and fiction.

Describe Thread of Gold Beads in 10 words or less.
Princess Amelia’s flight from war-torn 1890s Dahomey to a new land risking life and love.

When and why did you begin writing?
I began writing when I was nine/ten years old in Lagos, Nigeria. I always loved reading so it felt natural transitioning into writing.  It was a way of expressing myself and it also felt comfortable.  I always considered myself a writer even when it was only my sister who read my stories.

Is there a central message or theme in Thread of Gold Beads that you hope readers will come away from the reading experience with?
I hope readers will realize that they are stronger than any situation or circumstance.  When life deals us blows, we can always get up and continue.  The main character in this book had so many trials and challenges, but she managed to keep going.  She found the strength and the faith.

What has been the toughest criticism you’ve received as an author? What has been the best compliment?
That there are certain cultural aspects of the book that they don’t understand.  The best compliment has been that I wrote in such a manner that they were transported to that place and time.

What’s next for you? What can readers look forward to from Nike Campbell-Fatoki?
I am currently working on a compilation of contemporary short stories. I also have another historical fiction down the line.

If you had to go back and do it all over again, is there any aspect of writing your novel or getting it published that you would change?
No, nothing. It has been a great learning experience that I wouldn’t trade.

What has been the most effective method of marketing and/or publicizing your books so far? Why or how?
Nothing beats getting out there physically and talking about Thread of Gold Beads.  Physical contact is key; however, social media has also gotten to be a very useful tool.

5-Latte Review of Coleen Paratore's BIG

When asked to read Coleen Paratore's Big [Little Pickle Press' Site and Blog], I was more than delighted to do so. There are many readers of ChickLitGurrl with children, with nieces and nephews, and with friends with children, and Big is a wonderful gift with a great message for kids between the ages of 5 and 8.

Continue through the post to learn about Big, to see my 5-latte review, and to sit back and watch Big's trailer!

[Available in: Print | Kindle]

BIG goes beyond the basics to show that size is more than a matter of height. Touching on ideas such as health, citizenship, and imagination, this book can be the key to heartfelt dialogue between children and caregivers about the importance of values over valuables.

5 out of 5 lattes

This is a book that makes me smile from beginning to end. Geared toward children, it offers them tools to become BIG in their lives. For parents, it offers a tool to begin conversations with their children so that they can nurture their growing, BIG children. For everyone else, it's a book with a BIG message that can even have the child at heart reflecting on how to add bigness to their own lives.

Side note: Little Pickle Press [Facebook | Twitter | Pinterest] offers lesson plans for BIG and for other books by LPP. The BIG lesson plans are excellent, and even though they are geared toward teachers for classroom activities, I think parents could get a lot from the lessons to have one-on-one conversations with their little ones.
