The Passion for Writing Series: Author Lorie Hardy

Lorie Hardy, is CEO/Founder of Empowerment4life.com, an organization focusing on the four main aspects of life; finance, health, employment and love, with an emphasis on love. Blessed with a genuine love for humanity, a positive outlook on life, she believes there is someone for each of us and desires to see everyone in happy and healthy relationships.

Lorie works as a Compliance Manager for the County, but has a passion for writing. She is the mother of three beautiful children, Amanda, Shannon, and Houston who were partially responsible for the completion of her first published book There Are No Good Men, Because There Are No Good Women. Her goal was to take what she’d learned through her troubling relationship experiences and share it with them to ensure that they would be better equipped to understand and to deal with the complexities of similar problems that might arise in their futures.

During her life journey, Lorie experienced things that would cause her to question God, "Why am I going through all of this grief?" She was a good person and didn't think she deserved being treated in such an extremely undesirable way. We always think we know what is best for us. I had to learn that God was in control and knew what was best for me and mainly to seek Him before we make decisions.

Without pointing the finger at anyone else, she learned from a previous involvement, that you can’t always put the entire blame on the other person when your relationship isn’t working. “Even if you’re not causing the friction, you are equally as responsible if you’re not holding the other person accountable for the friction they’re causing.” It took 17 years for Lorie to understand and acquire the knowledge to pen her first book.

Once out of the storm, she realized that what she had experienced, wasn’t just for her personal growth and benefit. She had a testimony and a duty to share her story to empower every woman she encountered. She slowly began the task of writing her book, but it wasn't until random women, strangers with similar plights, began to share their personal stories with her that she really became driven to complete her book.

Listening to the women, she began to realize that at some point in time, women had lost their self-esteem, their self-worth, and their power. “We as women have so much power, but we have relinquished it just to say that we have a man or simply because we don't wish to be alone.”

There Are No Good Men, Because There Are No Good Women is geared toward single women, single men and married couples who desire to be in healthy, successful, and loving relationships.

Lorie is currently a Board of Director for Praying Single Mothers and is a weekly guest on the “Straight Talk” show broadcasting on starplanettv.com.

Lorie also is currently working on her second book and a play that will coincide with her first book. Lorie can be booked for speaking engagements through her website, www.empowerment4life.com, Twitter, Facebook, and e-mail.

This book is about situations and actions that women accept from men who continually treats the women badly; and the advice and solutions women can use to gain back their power.

The Passion for Writing - From Lorie's Pen

Where does your passion for writing come from?
My passion for writing comes from my life experiences. I used to be such an introvert and didn't feel I belong with any group of people that I encountered. So I would be by myself a lot and write. But I didn't bring my passion to fruition until about 10 years ago. Little by little I would get these ideas and write them down and that lead to plays then to my book ideas and to my first publish book.

If your passion for writing was a color, what color would it be and why?
If my passion were a color it would be purple. I love purple and purple is royalty. Purple is passionate to me and I'm a firm believer you have to be passionate about anything that you desire to achieve in life or you are wasting your time on that project.

How do you keep the passion burning in your relationship with storytelling?
Well this is my first published book and it's about relationships, but there is no real storytelling in my book. Mostly information for the individual looking to acquire a healthy and successful relationship. I do tell some stories, not that aren't untrue, just the names have been changed to protect the innocent...or guilty, however you view it...lol.

Revenge, Challenges, and the Writer: Writing Characters People WANT to Read About by Author Cheris Hodges

Because writing is cheaper than therapy, I've learned to channel my aggression into stories. Yes, writers get angry and get their revenge in print.

But anger and aggression can only take you so far when it comes to telling a story — unless you're writing a Taylor Swift song. To be honest with you, readers don't really care that you and your boyfriend broke up and you created a character in his image to torture.

What's the story about? Why is this character in these situations and how will he or she get out of it? What's the hook to keep the reader invested in your revenge fantasy?

This is where you take off the angry Carrie Underwood hat and put your writer hat on (and yes, I have one).

Just because you want use your words to do things that would get you arrested, it doesn't mean that the story you're telling is meant for publication or to be shared. Not until you actually make the story work — in my Tim Gunn voice.

I just started working on a story about Cynthia Rose. She was kidnapped, raped, killed two people, and just recently got charged with murder. The idea for all of this came to me when I was on a test drive at a dealership and noticed one of the female sales consultants talking to two men and showing them the trunk. I immediately wondered, What if they pushed her in that trunk and took off?

It had been busy that day at the store, and I'm sure no one would've noticed for a while that she and that car were missing.

The easy story to tell would've been about a dead car sales lady and the search for her killers. That was the direction I was going, too. Then, Shonell Bacon sent out a tweet about the toughest situations that you've ever put your characters in. Cynthia's plight was born.

Cynthia is proving to be one of my most challenging characters ever. She's a victim, hero, and criminal all rolled up into one. Sometimes writing about her makes me cringe, cry, and laugh.

But she's developed her voice, and I like where she's taking me. That's character development, and that's what makes a book a page turner.

Cheris Hodges was bitten by the writing bug at an early age and always knew she wanted to be a writer. She is a 1999 graduate of Johnson C. A Sexy, Poetic Treat

NIGHTS OVER EGYPT is a sexy, hot, poetic treat. I was instantly swept up in the story of Egypt and King, two poetic souls that find themselves falling in love hard and fast before words were ever exchanged between them in conversation... unless you count the sensual rhythmic vibes they serve to one another on the stage of Nights, a venue where those of rhythm, beats, and words let their poetry shine. I really enjoyed this story. This story has rhythm. It dances and moves and brings you into the rhythms of the characters, their feelings, their words, their actions. This story is sensual, from the poetry to the conversations between Egypt and King. This story is hot and sexy, and Gabrielle's movement of words and sentences during those sexy interludes had me nodding and wanting more. There are many reasons why I so dig this story, but my main reason is EGYPT. I feel her BIG time. She's sassy and saucy and knows what she wants and who she wants, but she's also insecure and unsure, and who wouldn't be when love strikes that fast and leaves you breathless and with head set to spinning? Her push and pull with King puts sizzle in their talks and electrifying heat in the moments when skin connects with skin. Read the story. Enough said.

A Whisper to a Scream by Elissa Gabrielle: A Book Review

[Order A Whisper to a Scream today at AmazonBarnes and Noble, and publisher's site!]

The colors of love comes in several shades for Queen Thomas, and has been prevalent on her canvas of life as she continues to paint by the numbers. Successful beyond measure, but flawed to a degree where bright hues tend to fade a bit, happiness should be much more than an illusion. Queen is a young African American defense attorney passionately advocating justice for her brown-skinned clients, despite being subjected by black and blue bruises from her ex-boyfriend. Then there are the shades of gray that matters most when trying to balance the memorable scales of a loving relationship with a father that raised her as a single parent. Along with that are the dark clouds of uncertainty accentuating the need to suppress the void of missing the touches that only a mother can manifest.

Is a successful but committed relationship so hard to fathom where integrity and faithfulness is not compromised? The whispers get louder with promises of primal screams as the colors take on a different tint as the plot thickens. Enter Quincy Hughes, a handsome doctor easy on the eyes but with an underlying intrigue that allows curiosity to kill much more than the cat. Quincy is on a mission. He relentlessly pursues her despite his mystique, and forces Queen to question the taboo concept of accepted love vs. forbidden fruit; and whether there's a future in it for her. Is she ready to tackle the relevancy of this different persuasion? And what about her ex-lover -- will he settle for second best and allow Queen to pursue matters of the heart, albeit with someone else?

Sensual and brimming with sexuality, this heart-wrenching drama is groundbreaking fiction. A Whisper To a Scream is a sexy, moving and riveting tale that will pull you deep into an unforgettable erotic, socially-conscious, and emotionally-charged ride.

A Suspenseful Story on Shades of Love and Overcoming Pain

Writers always hear how important it is to grab their readers from the start of a story. Author Elissa Gabrielle succeeds in doing that with her novel, A WHISPER TO A SCREAM. The violent, frantic, desperate first scene, at times, was almost difficult to read for its stark visuals, but you WILL read, and you WILL stay on the page. Gabrielle gives us an interesting main character in Queen Thomas. She's young, beautiful, a highly successful defense attorney with a father that loves her to pieces... and a boyfriend who seems to want to beat her body into pieces. Gabrielle gives Queen a lot to contend with. She's trying to leave her abusive mate. She's trying to deal with the lingering feelings she has for a loving mother that has been gone for years. She's trying to save her latest client's life and keep him out of prison. She's trying to avoid Dr. Quincy Hughes, a man that wants to love her but her staunch desire to not cross color lines in romance keep her at arm's distance. It doesn't help that someone she least expects seems to develop stalker tendencies toward her, too. I was a fan of the suspenseful qualities of the novel. Gabrielle does a great job in dropping intrigants in the story and providing pay-offs for them along the way. She layers these in really well. I also enjoyed the building of Queen and Quincy's relationship and the explosive consequences that occur toward the end of the story because of that relationship. Although there are places where the story could have been trimmed some, you shouldn't let that keep you from reading A WHISPER TO A SCREAM. The characters, the layering of suspense, the building of drama and conflict, and the surprising climax all make this a worthwhile novel to read.

A Story of Love Lost, Remembered, and Kept

Love Lost. Love Remembered. Love Kept. These are at the heart of YM's novel, Not Mine to Keep. In the story, we meet Addison, a woman who knew at a young age what love was and who she would love forever. Although she loses that love, she manages to keep something close that always reminds her of it. Eventually, Addison learns that even those things you keep don't always stay with you. I liked how YM framed the story, connecting the reader with a gripping beginning and ending that encased the heart of the story: how Addison and the love of her life came to be... and not to be. I found Not Mine to Keep to be a good read, especially because of the story's framing and the tenderness in which YM tells the story. There were, however, some things that jarred my reading, such as sometimes not knowing who was speaking and wanting a slower pace in some places and further development of the goings on of the story.

The Passion for Writing Series: Author Kai Leakes

From Iowa, but later relocating to Alton, IL and St. Louis, MO, Kai Leakes was a multifaceted Midwestern child, who gained an addiction to books at an early age. Sharing stories with her cousins as a teen, writing books didn't seem like something she would pursue until one day in college. Storytelling continues to be a major part of her very DNA, with the goal of sharing tales that entertain and add color to a gray literary world.

In her spare time she likes to cook, dabble in photography, and assists with an internet/social networking group online. Loving to feed her book addiction, romance, fantasy and fiction novels are her world. Reading those particular genres help guide her as she finds the time to write and study for school.

The Passion for Writing - From Kai's Pen

Where does your passion for writing come from?
Ever since my mother indoctrinated in me the love for reading, the passion to create my own world of stories, filled with fairy tales, mermaids, and later as I got older, superheroes, magic, vampires, romance, and more, I believe that passion had always been there. It was encoded in my DNA from a family who loved to read. The craving to actually sit and write out that passion only sparked later when I was in college and later after I had graduated, but before that, the oral storytelling started in my teens when I would create my cousins stories at our sleep overs.

If your passion for writing was a color, what color would it be and why?
My favorite colors are always purple, and sometimes red. If you think on a color wheel, in order to create purple, you need two colors, red and blue.  They say blue is a calming color and red is a passionate color, I think it's perfect that I have the equal balance of both. I am a Libra so, for me, writing gives me the chance to balance out my desires to just disappear into my own mind, yet still be in the present. This is why I overall chose purple for my writing color.

How do you keep the passion burning in your relationship with storytelling?
Now this is a slightly difficult question.  For me writing and storytelling are two completely different things. I call myself a storyteller before a writer. So, for me, in order to keep my passion burning with both, I oftentimes find myself either reading other books when I have the time, or watch a good movie or television show. I also enjoy being a procrastinator which lets me just sit and be in my own mind, telling myself various storylines, that I may or may not use in the future. I also have conversations with one of my muses in the flesh, which helps me divvy out the clutter in my mind, that may be holding back a great story, plot idea, or character. Otherwise, you can find me nose deep in a book or watching a great show or movie.

Excerpt from Sin Eaters

Chapter One

Today…

Metallic, sweet and mind intense flavor filled the air. The quiet that floated around made the hairs on passerby’s in the night to stand up as if the already chill filled wind wasn’t enough to have them shivering. Rich, black ebon swallowed the alleyway keeping the individuals who occupied it secured and sequestered away from all who dared peek down the tight tunnel. Water idly sliding down the asphalted street, mixed with oil and idle trash skating against the cracked surface, cushioned midnight colored Timberland’s as the flash of twinkling light cascaded in a flash like a pulse near the booted body.

Inhaling even shallow breaths, the individual listened as all sound seemed to be absorbed away as if in a tornado. This silence triggered the timed attack, which had the anticipation in the individual’s body expand with power, velocity, speed and well checked strength.

If one was to be one of the many idle flies which hovered in the nearby dumpster, they would be amazed at the sight of the super human individual running in an almost flying position and landing on the second hulking form in the alley.

The rise of a scent that had cats meowing and arched in defense on the railings of a window and under a parked car filled the air again as the crisp white flash of light slashed in the night air, landing against the second balked individual as the attacker hissed.

In a fraction of a blink, claws the size of an oversized lion slashed in the air as tentacles dipped out near the blind spot of the attacker, making the being jump in the air. Bringing down a flashing light of metal unto the second balked former human looking being but now entity of horrendous looks, the precise slash against the entities flesh caused the now familiar smell to fill the air once more.

The attacker crouched low in a resting battle position, taking in shallow calm breaths as the thing turn to attack again, running full speed. Its Italian leather wing tipped shoes creating a rhythm of tapping song on the alleyway floor, causing the attacker to hum, throwing the entity off its thoughts.
Light sheen of perspiration kissed the attacker’s forehead with each calm inhale. The attacker lived for this, loved it and desired the hunt of creatures such as this.

Strategizing the next move, the attacker thought back to how this prey was hunted. A quiet smile flashed across the attackers lips. It wasn’t hard to get to the sick bastard, the attacker posed as the entities preferred targets, an angry teenager, who wanted nothing but to get away from their parent. It made the attacker clutch the blade that nestled comfortably against his palm, in anger at the obscene and pornographic discussions that would occur with the demon.

It made it even easier to identify that this monster wasn’t the shrewd Italian entrepreneur he portrayed to be, but was in fact a succubae level soul polluter demon. These breed of evil were the most degenerate of demons, they enjoyed feasting off the pain of the victims through lewd sexual means, physical decapitating torture and flesh eating.

Knowing this, it silently pleased the attacker to stalk and mentally threaten the demon’s territory by baiting it, since these demons were known for their territorial nature.

Allowing the demon to believe they were to meet up outside of a popular artist’s concert, the attacker led the demon to the alleyway through simple mind manipulation and the rest is history. Shuddering with a lethal dose of pleasure and battle tactics, the attacker’s body tightened with the wait as the breeze in the alley lightly brushed against skin.

Side stepping within the low crouch, the attacker pivoted and flipped forward with the lithe agility of a panther producing a silver gun. Suddenly as if time stopped, bullets exploded in the air as the glimmering and glowing objects penetrated the thrown back body of the beast, causing it to howl in pain.

The attacker ran full speed, watching the bullets hit each expertly calculated point on the beast’s body. Landing a blow to the entities ribcage; the muscles in the attacker’s bicep tightening with the impact of breaking bones and tearing flesh.

Seething in anger, contempt, disbelief and hate, the monster attempted to slash at the attacker with its claws, its teeth dripping with a mixture of its own blood and a liquid miasma. The beast successfully slammed the attacker into the side of a building, breaking bricks and creating a crater in the wall, rushing like a bull to launch another attack of teeth and claws. Pivoting out of the way with a deep guttural grunt, the attacker let another round of bullets to release and absorb into the slashing and bleeding beast, watching him fall.

High pitched human screams burst from the beast as it lay on the cold glistening wet pavement, its twisted and contorted body writhing as the attacker casually walked over it kneeling down and grabbing it by its neck.

Watching slowly as the entity howled, hissing and fighting back, its eyes begged to be left alone as its tentacles and claws melted away into a very human hand. As the once beastly thing revealed itself during its cries, a disheveled looking handsome muscular man, dressed in an Italian designed straight from the runway suit, coughed up spewing blood and wheezed in agony. The clawing man, murmured in unintelligible sentences, his sun kissed olive skin, slowly fading into a murky grey.

Wrinkles of decay and diseases, emitting from his once handsome frame, seemed to slosh away with every scream of pain and anger. Flowing oak colored hair, drifted away as if it was dust in the wind. The man reached out attempting to tear at the attacker’s throat as flashes of the demon’s past life of darkness flowed into his vision through the eyes and briefly flashed smile of the attacker’s photogenic face.

Hunching over in a swift movement that would rival and shame a snake, if a snake could be shamed, the attacker hissed, claw palmed the man in the chest clutching at his engorged heart to pull it to its surface, beating against rapidly thinning skin, as the man screamed in garbled terror.

“Ashes to ashes…”, was whispered in the air as the attacker pulled the heart from the man’s cavity and ferociously bit into the side of the screaming man’s neck tearing and cavernously biting until the attacker’s mouth seemed to fuse with the writhing man’s jugular, as rivers of blood fluidly glided everywhere.

Fun, Engaging Spin on a Greek Myth

Sometimes, you just want to be entertained, and Kaitlin Bevis delivers much entertainment in book one of her Daughters of Zeus series, Persephone. Bevis immediately sets us up with a great character in Persephone. Persephone, a high schooler who deals with all the insecurities that comes with being a girl in high school, learns that she comes with something a bit more different from all the other girls: she's a goddess. I enjoyed seeing Persephone move in her real-life spaces and dealing with things, such as the cute guy being interested in her, and the jealous girls hating on her, and her--being so beautiful and hated on--not really seeing her true beauty and worth. Seeing this same girl then having to realize the truth of her goddess status and the consequences of that status makes Persephone even more appealing as a character. If you are a fan of the Greek myth of Persephone and Hades, or of Greek myths in general, I think you will appreciate this modern retelling. Bevis provides great characters, strong description, and a vivid imagination throughout this novel. Definitely engaged me enough to head straight to the next book, Daughter of the Earth and Sky.

Excerpt

Kalil wants a baby. Maybe even babies. Thinking about babies makes me think of Riley and Patience. I know Riley held on to her demons, but what she did makes no sense to me. There’s something Marcus isn’t telling me. I call him and ask if I can stop by when I’m done here. He sounds excited to hear from me. I finish with Amber and as I’m leaving Stanley walks in. He asks if I’ve given any thought to changing my mind about coming to the wedding. I ignore him. When I get to Marcus’s house, he’s outside. I don’t know if he was waiting for me or if he was already outside. It’s too hot to just be sitting outside.

“Hey, I’m glad you called. I wanted to talk to you about a few competitions I heard about.”

I walk onto the porch and immediately stop. I hate this porch. I’m not even sure how he can be so calm while he’s standing here. I walk backwards until I’m on the lawn. “That’s not why I’m here, Marcus.”

“Then why?”

“I can’t stop thinking about it. I need to know. What set her off?”

His expression changes. He doesn’t look happy to see me anymore.

“I mean it’s just so weird. She lived with all that for so long and then just out of the blue with no explanation she goes and does this.” I don’t elaborate on what this is. He knows exactly what I’m talking about, but he doesn’t respond. I watch as he goes back up to the porch and opens the door to the house.

“I got arrested.”

What!? I start to ask why, but he answers before I do.

“Soliciting a prostitute.”

He doesn’t say anymore. Riley needed someone to talk to. Someone she could trust. The one person she thought that was betrayed her. Why didn’t she come to me? Thoughts of her flood my mind as I go to the car, but everything goes blank when I see Nyeem’s reflection in the tint of the car window.

“Hello,” he says.

Hello? Seriously? I go for the panic button on the keypad. I’m not sure how he knew what I was thinking of doing, maybe my eyes gave it away, but he grabs my hand and squeezes my knuckles together. My keys slip from my hands as I cry out.

“You should be happy to see me.” He’s behind me, using his body to pin me against the car. His hand is around my neck and I’m struggling to breathe. “You’re making this harder than it has to be, all you gotta do is talk to me!”

Trying to pry his hand away would be useless, so I go for his neck instead. He lets my neck go, but doesn’t move away.

“I knew you’d be a fighter.”

I can feel his lips at the nape of my neck, his erection growing in the small of my back. The pleasure he’s getting from this disgusts me.“What do you want? Why are you doing this?”

“Because you act like you don’t remember me!”

“I only worked at Sirens for a few months, how could I remember you?” I yell.

“I was here long before Sirens! I’ve been here since all you cared about was freestyle, since day one and you get with Kalil and forget everything else that matters!”

My mind threatens to shut down as I try to figure out what he’s talking about. I have no idea who he is, but he obviously knows me well. He slides his hand over my left breast then tries to slip it between my legs. I scream and push against the car, but he’s too strong. I reach behind me again, this time going for his face. His eyes are my target, but he’s taller than I thought. My thumb slips into his mouth and I dig all five of my nails into his jaw. He backs away just enough for me to turn to him. I thought this would make it easier to fight him. I realize how wrong that thought was when I feel the back of his hand across my face. It doesn’t sting like the slaps I’ve felt from my mom or anyone else. It hurts like hell and I’m dizzy. I can’t tell if my vision is blurry because of the blow or my tears. I can hear him yelling at me, but I can’t focus on what he’s saying. I grab my keys just as he grabs me. He’s hovering over me; choking me again. I push the panic button and the alarm goes off.

“The cops are on their way, get off of her or I’ll shoot,” Marcus says.

Nyeem ignores him.

“I’m serious mister, let her go!”

“Marcus, what’s going on?” a distant voice asks.

Another yells, “What are you doing? Get off of her!”

I think the neighbors have started to come out because of the car alarm, but I can’t understand why hasn’t Marcus shot him yet?

A female yells, “Help them, get him off of her!”

Marcus chambers a round and yells, “I won’t ask you again!”

He didn’t even have the gun cocked?!

Nyeem kisses me and says, “Think long and hard, you can’t just erase me. I’ll see you soon.”

I can breathe again. By the time I catch my breath and look around he’s lost in the crowd of Marcus and his neighbors as they check to see if I’m okay.

A Romance with Literary Bite

Shewanda Pugh's Crimson Footprints is a beautiful story of angst, family, and love. From the very first sentence or two, I was brought into Pugh's strong storytelling skills, her way of writing just the right words for the story, words that sound and feel right when read aloud, too. Character is often the big component of a story that keeps me reading. If there is a wonderful character, I want to see what happens to him or her. Pugh's development of characters is wonderful. The main character, Deena... wow. Pugh deftly weaves a unique, deep, and intriguing character with Deena, using a complex host of characters to not only flesh out the overall story but to also develop Deena's character. The delicate hand that Pugh uses to paint this story is one not often seen in a debut novel. It's obvious that Pugh considered language, the sound and movement of it. Considered the complexities of life and how one tries to find happiness in the midst of sadness, grief, and heartache. Considered that even in happiness, there are still glimpses of sadness, grief, and heartache. She made me feel for her characters, made me become an active reader in the experience of seeing this story unfold. Can't wait to jump into Part 2.

An eleven-year-old boy hitchhikes 1500 miles from Bismarck to Miami; a prostitute yearns for escape from a prison of her own making, and the horrible secrets of a long-ago murder are unraveled in the shadows of one woman's dreams. Lizzie Hammond is an ill-fated whore that believes in little, save her own ultimate demise. Kenji Tanaka is a pseudo-architect, content to hide in the shadows of his family's overwhelming success. Neither can stand the other. But the appearance of a boy only rumored to be true helps them discover that two unlikely halves can fit together as the perfect whole. For Lizzie Hammond and Kenji Tanaka, redemption is found in the most unlikely of places: each other, even as the world around them disintegrates.

Pugh Brings Another Great Story

You never know what to expect in life... and in books it appears. In Crimson Footprints II: New Beginnings, author Shewanda Pugh illustrates this very well. Many of the themes in this novel echo what I found in the first book: overcoming the past, dealing with family drama, building love in the family, developing self-worth. We get to see the further development and growth of characters we learned to love in book one, and we get to see this current story unfold on a character that probably left many readers cold in the first book: Lizzie. I have to admit, she was not my favorite character in the first book, and wasn't in this book either, but Pugh's ability to construct a character's identity so that we see a living, breathing person full of flaws and dreams and desires makes you want to see a change come for that character. I had that for Lizzie... and for Kenji, another major player in the story. This is a strong story, a great follow-up to Part 1. I still favor Part 1; that first paragraph hooked me so in that book! Having finished Part 2, I'm left wondering what treats Pugh will bring to readers in her next work.

Traveling the Writing Journey with Author Lorie Hardy

How did the idea for your book There Are No Good Men because There Are No Good Women present itself to you?
I've always had a passion for women and the struggle they have with obtaining suitable companionship. But I guess I decided to put my learned experience in words when I decided to end my marriage and got back into the dating world. I would have these conversations with men and most of them would tell me how I should share my knowledge with other women. Listening to their stories gave me the insight from a male perspective as to what women were doing wrong and what they could improve or change to be in a good relationship.

[Buy your copy of There Are No Good Men because There Are No Good Women today from The Empowerment 4 Life Website!]

This book is about situations and actions that women accept from men who continually treats the women badly; and the advice and solutions women can use to gain back their power.

Let's talk about your journey of writing the book. How easy, difficult was it? What pushed you to write this idea to its completion?
It was very difficult for me to complete my novel, only because I was a huge procrastinator and had so many ideas in my head that I felt overwhelmed. At first I would try to work on a different book everyday to feel as though I had accomplish something, but in actuality I wasn't really accomplishing anything. My first boost came from Steve Harvey when he completed his book in the same genre as mine. But what really got me to get going, focus on one book and complete it, was a conversation with my fiance' who has always been supported and whom I have daily conversations with most of the time about relationships. We were talking about an article on-line regarding a relationship and the title of my book just came out of my mouth and I knew immediately after I said it, that was going to be my title and that motivated me to complete my book.

How was your journey to get the book published? Did you attempt to get an agent? A publisher? How did that fare? Did you go the self-publishing route? If so, talk to us about that journey.
The journey to publish my book wasn't a road paved in gold...lol. I absolutely did everything by myself, except the editing and book cover. I didn't get an agent because agents aren't cheap and I'm a single mother with 3 kids, 1 just graduated from college and 1 going into college. Also, agents can't guarantee you that you will get your book published. Their job is to get you in front of the major publishers, but it's your job to write something they deem as a best seller. I did a whole lot of research and didn't understand the royalty process. How do you get a much larger percentage than I do and I wrote the book and paying you to print it? So I found out lots of avenues I could take that could save me an enormous amount of money. I got it copy written myself, because the cheapest place I found that would was charging me $220, when it only cost $35. I sent it to a POD and sold them off of my website or at book fairs because paying someone thousands of dollars to only get 2 to 5 copies, didn't sit well with me. And if I wanted more copies I had to pay for them and you would get 80 percent of my sells where I would only get 20 percent. Now, that didn't work for me, I'm definitely not discouraging or encouraging anyone to use this agency or that one. But I am suggesting that you do the research for yourself. There is nothing like finding out for yourself what you think will work for you. By all means, get other people's opinion, but you make the final decision.

What avenues have you used to promote your book? Which ones have been the most successful? Why do you think that is?
I used a lot of blogtalkradio stations to promote my book, did a few Internet shows, still doing a weekly show that I have an opportunity to promote, social media, email, word-of-mouth. I think I did a good job of promoting and thought I would fair a little better than I did, especially since I have such a controversial book title. But there are so many books out there, especially since more authors have the ability to self-publish. It takes a lot of consistent effort to get your book out there to the masses. In that area, I think I could have done more, but my focus has been more on my play off the book that I haven't really applied myself to the promotion end.

AND NOW... A Peek into There Are No Good Men because There Are No Good Women

If I’ve heard this once, I’ve heard women say it a million times. “There are no good men!” And I’ve heard men say, “There are no good women!” Now we’ve got the blame game going. Men are blaming women and women are blaming men. There can’t be a resolution if no one is willing to own up and make a change. Time after time I have heard women say, “I don’t know what happened. He wasn’t like that before. How could I have been so blind? When did he change?” Women are emotional creatures; men are visual creatures. Both have the tendency to get caught up in a persona and ignore the obvious.

Some women get so desperate to have a man that they will tolerate bad behavior just to say they have someone. Ladies, don’t get caught up in a person just because you are tired of being lonely. Loneliness makes you very vulnerable to men who don’t have your best interests at heart. I know everyone wants to be loved and love somebody, and I believe there is someone out there for everyone, but you have to make sure that you relinquish your heart to a person who will take very special care of it. You don’t want someone who will stomp all over it, bruise it, or cut it up and out.

It’s so humorous to hear women say that there are no good men. Women will get involved with a man they know isn’t any good, and when he does them wrong, the first thing out of their mouths is, “He wasn’t any good anyway!” Huh? Are you serious? If you knew he wasn’t any good, why are you involved with him? In response I get the gaze of a deer in the headlights. Ladies, we can’t keep blaming men for their inappropriate behavior.

Don’t get me wrong, there are some straight, no good dogs out there. They have got to have every attractive woman they see. They couldn’t remain faithful or treat you correctly if Jesus were holding their hand. It’s just who they are, they don’t see any wrong in it.

But the majority of men are influenced by the response they get from women. Men only do what works. If they are with a woman in one town and another woman in another town, and both women find out about each other and still stay with the man, whose fault is that? It surely is not the man’s fault. He’s only doing what he thinks will work, what he can get away with. And my question is, “Why? Why would you allow a man to be with another woman when you are in a relationship with him?” Yeah, I know there is a high infidelity rate. No one is faithful, everyone is cheating, marriage isn’t sacred, blah, blah, blah. But even though we all know this, do we have to follow suit? Can’t you step out of the box? Can you be the leader and not the follower?

Recipe for a Happy Life by Brenda Janowitz: A Book Review

[Order Recipe for a Happy Life today at Amazon, BN.com

There’s more than one recipe for a happy life.

Hannah Goodman doesn't grow up like most kids on the Upper East side. Her mother, Gray, is an award-winning photojournalist with little time for the banalities of child-rearing, and when she's not jetting off to follow the latest scoop, she's camped out at the Hotel Chelsea. The closest thing Hannah's got to a traditional matriarch is her grandmother—a glamorous widow six times over with a sprawling Hampton’s estate. But Gray is determined that her daughter resist the siren song of the trust fund set, and make her own way in the world. So Hannah does just that—becoming a successful lawyer in New York City, and dating a handsome musician. Hannah has it all, or so it seems, until one hot June day the carefully constructed pieces of her life break apart. When she throws it all in and seeks solace at her grandmother's estate, she discovers that where happiness is concerned, you don’t have to stick to the recipe.

From the author of Jack with a Twist and Scot on the Rocks comes a charming, clever, and romantic novel about three generations of women with a culture all their own.

“Brenda Janowitz has found the recipe for a great summer read: a dash of Hampton's glamour, a sprinkle of romance, and a cup of a feisty heroine you won't soon forget. RECIPE FOR A HAPPY LIFE will keep you charmed from beginning to end.” -Julie Buxbaum, author of After You

A Wonderful Story of Family, Love, Loss, and Moving On

A funny thing happened on my way to read just a few pages of Brenda Janowitz's latest novel, Recipe for a Happy Life: I couldn't stop reading. My goal was to get the first chapter in, get a feel for the story, and then come back later to finish and write my review, but the story pulled me in immediately, and every time I tried to walk away from the book, I couldn't. I'm a fan of Janowitz's and loved her first two books, but this one is by far her best. She gives us a wonderful heroine in Hannah Goodman, a woman who is complex and unsure and insecure... and wanting: of loving family bonds, a good romantic relationship, and love. Janowitz's supporting characters pulled my heart just as much as Hannah did. I love how unique each character is and how they all have their own stories that affect them... and Hannah, like they should: they are they to support her, after all. One thing I'm a big fan of in writing is good scene development, good chapter development and leaving readers with those endings that make readers HAVE to read on to see what happens next. Janowitz never disappointed with this. After every scene, every chapter, I was rushing to whatever was next. I think my favorite thing about Recipe for a Happy Life is that I FELT. I was MOVED. It's been a while since big, fat tears rolled down my cheeks because I cared that deeply about the goings on of a fictional character. And yet they did roll on to the end. I'm so looking forward to seeing what Janowitz writes next; she's set the bar pretty high for herself. And here's hoping this story makes it onto the big screen. Would LOVE to see that happen!
