Get READY to Learn about Jeri Smith-Ready's WICKED GAME!

Photo © 2006 Szemere Photography

A Little about Jeri

Jeri Smith-Ready (website) has been making up stories in her head since she was five, but waited another two decades to start writing them down. Growing up outside Philadelphia, she created an array of imaginary friends with complex relationships and storylines. This project ended when real kids moved into the neighborhood.

Her first print novel, EYES OF CROW (November 2006, Luna Books), was nominated for two Ritas and won the Romantic Times Reviewers Choice award for Best Fantasy.

Jeri holds a master’s degree in environmental policy and lives in Maryland with her husband, cat, and the world’s goofiest greyhound. She fosters shelter dogs with Tails of Hope Sanctuary (website). As of this writing, she has hosted fifteen dogs at her home (not at the same time!), all of whom have found loving adopters.

A Conversation with Jeri

Fill in the blank: "Reading WICKED GAME will _____."
"...make you laugh, shiver, and stay up late (I recommend calling in sick to work the next day). It will also leave you humming all your favorite songs. "

What was the spark to which your novel WICKED GAME began to take shape?
I was driving to work, flipping the dial and came to a classic rock station playing “Bad Company” by the band of the same name. I thought, Hmm, “Bad Company” would be a perfect title for a paranormal book with a shady main character.

By the time I got to work, I had a fully formed idea for the vampire DJs stuck in time and a heroine with a criminal past. If I hadn’t been listening to that station at that moment, the series would have never been born.

The punch line is that even though it all began with “Bad Company,” the publisher ultimately asked me to change the title.

When did you know that writing was something you truly wanted to do?
The night I started writing my first novel, which was, not coincidentally, the night I had my first double espresso. That novel wasn’t publishable, but I’d already caught “the bug”—I was hooked on creating stories and living inside another person’s mind. I need a certain amount of drama in my life, and books are a great outlet, so that I don’t wreak havoc among my family and friends.

What's your favorite thing about WICKED GAME?
The interplay among the characters. Not just the hero and heroine (though that’s my favorite), but all the disc jockeys and the humans around them. It’s like a TV show where the audience sees the cast as one big family (a family they actually *want* to visit again and again).

I like to think the secondary characters (like Jim the hippie DJ or Franklin the “split-personality” sales manager) are people that readers would love to hang out with and learn more about.

(On second thought, Jim might be dangerous to hang out with. That flower-child act? He just does it to get chicks. )

Talk to us about the writing process of WICKED GAME. How long did it take you to write from idea to completed manuscript? Once the novel was completed, how long did it take you to receive a deal?
When the idea smacked me between the eyes, I was in the middle of writing EYES OF CROW, which was under contract, so all I could do was jot down a few pages of notes. In between revisions and edits to that novel and its sequel, I finished WICKED GAME, reaching a final draft over a year after I had the original idea. From then it took a few months to receive a deal. And then another eighteen months for the publication. So it’s been almost three years to the day in the making, and I’m incredibly excited.

What are three adjectives that best describe WICKED GAME?
Fun, sexy, dark.

What are three adjectives that best describe YOU?
Friendly, sardonic, independent.

Music plays a big role in your novel; how important is music to your life?
I’m not a musician (other than three years of flute in middle school), but I’ve always been a fan. I used to grab a hairbrush and sing along with Pat Benatar to an invisible audience in my living room. Later I portrayed a rock star (Crow in Sam Shepard’s play Tooth of Crime), and I thought that would be the pinnacle of my connection to music. Little did I know I would one day write books about vampire DJs.

Music is essential to my writing process--it builds and inspires the world and the characters. I love listening to soundtracks and film scores while I write because they have a built-in storytelling flow. My favorites are usually the soundtracks to movies I haven’t seen because then I’m not distracted by memories of that story.

Jeri Smith-Ready: The Soundtrack. What three tracks would make it onto a soundtrack of your life?
“Solsbury Hill” by Peter Gabriel.
“Breed” by Nirvana.
“Mr. Jones” by Counting Crows.

Hmm, that’s kind of odd. The first two are (to me) about doing your own thing regardless of others’ expectations, but the last one is about seeking love and approval on a mass scale.

Do you have a standard process to your writing? Are you an outliner or a jump-right-in writer?
Funny you should ask. It feels like with each book, I have to learn how to write novels all over again. The same process that works brilliantly for one might be a disaster for the next. For instance, sometimes I write scenes out of order, and other novels I write straight through from beginning to end. Sometimes I write a first draft without editing; other times I realize I’ve made such a huge mistake in plot or character that I need to go back and rewrite what I have before I can move on.

I like to work with at least a loose outline to keep me on track, but it usually changes drastically as I go along. As I get to know the characters better, they often tell me that my plans for them are completely cracked.

Word Association. What comes to mind when you see the following words:
WICKED GAME: Fun!
MUSIC: Essential to life.
CIARA GRIFFIN: Gutsy.
WRITING: Faith over fear.
JERI SMITH-READY: Brainy airhead.

What advice would you offer aspiring-to-be-published authors?
Get plenty of sleep. Seriously. It’s not just a health concern (I support lots of unhealthy activities). It’s about the writing. I read a study that said the part of our brains that governs creativity is the first part to deteriorate under sleep deprivation. Also, I find that when I’m tired, I lose all ability to evaluate my own work. It all turns into a load of crap. Which makes for tough edits.

What is the biggest thing you've learned about the industry since having your first book published?
Be a professional. The world—even the publishing world—does not revolve around any one author. We need to work with our publishers as a team to make our books the best they can be. No one is entitled to success.

Luckily, I didn’t have to learn this lesson the hard way; I was fortunate to personally know many published authors who provided great role models.

Dream-on: WICKED GAME: THE MOVIE. Who would play Ciara Griffin?
Scarlett Johansson has a look that perfectly captures Ciara’s sensuality and craftiness.

Natalie Portman could also do it, if she’d go blonde. But I wouldn’t recommend that look for her.

What projects are you currently working on?
I’m finishing the second vampire book (tentatively titled BAD TO THE BONE), which will be published in Spring 2009. To tide readers over until then, I’m writing a series of tie-in short stories, to appear on my website every other month beginning in June, that depict the “turning” of each of the vampire DJs. These are very secret stories they only share with people they trust with their lives.

But don’t tell the vamps I’m posting their stories on my website. They’d drain me for sure! ;-)

I’m also putting the final touches on THE REAWAKENED, the third book in my Aspect of Crow romantic fantasy trilogy. That will appear in November 2008. I’m sad to see it end, but I felt really strongly about keeping it to three books as originally promised.

::Everyday, people suffer with failure - of relationships, of jobs, of
finances...the list goes on ad nauseam. Many times, these same people
can't see the nugget of truth that hides within the failure, the truth
that can enable them to grow and prosper in the future. In her latest
commentary, There is No Failure, Only Feedback, Dr. Cherry examines
how we can find the purpose behind failure in order to move from the
failure in a positive way.

::Black Pain: It Just Looks Like We're Not Hurting, by Terrie Williams,

and sex. Few realize these destructive acts are symptoms of our inner
sorrow. Reviewer Sharon Haynes shares her thoughts on this provocative
book, a book desperately needed in the African American community.

3) FEATURE

In EPISODE Three of LOVE BYTES, SD's new online serial, Destiny
couldn't get Devon's sexy dance out of her head, and she couldn't
get him out of her home as he paid her a surprise visit full of food,
talk, and kisses!

NOW, in EPISODE FOUR, Destiny's cyberfriend suggests she finally
accept a date with Devon. She takes his advice, and although she's
beyond giddy to spend time with him, she can't help but to let her
past creep into her mind, dampening her excitement...

::Excerpt::

Destiny nodded her head, remembering the question and sighed.
"He does have a point."

"Who does?"

Destiny swiveled in her chair, her eyes falling upon Devon , looking
just as good as he had yesterday, except for today he was stylishly
dressed in a black suit, crisp white shirt, and black and gold designer
tie.

Damn, Destiny thought, he would have to look all fine and
everything today.

She cleared her throat and responded, "No one. Was just talking
out loud, thinking. So, what's up?"

Devon smiled his big, bright, come hither smile and sauntered
across Destiny's office, sitting down in the stiff back, burgundy
leather chair in front of Destiny's desk.

"I wanted to say hi," he said, placing his large hands upon her
desk. "Wanted to see how things were with you."

Destiny laughed. "Didn't you see me yesterday?"

"Yeah, but we were interrupted..." Devon 's eyes linked with
Destiny's and for a brief moment, she felt as if she would
spontaneously combust. The heat that shot from Devon 's eyes
was lethal. "I was wondering if we could pick up where we left
off." Devon reached out and touched Destiny's hands. She jumped
from her chair.

3) DA CYBER CHRONICLES

In episode #12 of Everything's Gonna Be Alright: Clemson and Cadu hang out
for a little sisterly bonding about the men in their lives...

NOW, in episode #13: Kat, once again, tries to belittle Clemson in front of
Tre, but Clemson lets Kat know what's up; Randi decides to put her all into
her relationship with the older Max, but a chance meeting between her and
Dru...and his date leaves Randi feeling jealous.

::Excerpt::

When Max came home last night, Randi made sure he knew how much he meant
to her. She had a light dinner prepared, soft music, but Max was more
interested in what Randi was wearing, or her lack of clothing. She greeted
him in a black sheer negligee, something she had picked up after her talk with
Clemson. Randi wasn’t even sure she was going to wear it, but as the day wore
on, she knew she had to make a statement.

And she did. Max quickly took Randi into the bedroom and they made love for
what seemed like an eternity. Max kissed Randi in every place he could think
of, touching her, holding her, making her feel things that she never felt before.
She couldn’t remember who moaned more, she or Max. Her body had never
been given the attention it was given last night, and she felt totally satisfied
afterwards.

But one thing managed to creep into her beautiful night of lovemaking with
Max. A tear. A stream of tears to be exact. Max had looked into Randi’s
eyes and noticed that she was crying. He was so worried he had hurt her
and when he asked what was wrong, she mumbled something about emotions
and being a woman and being so high on what just happened between them.

She kept the truth to herself. Through the most romantic night of her
life, the one time she felt so alive that every cell in her body danced with
pleasure, she was thinking about Dru and wishing that it was he who was
giving her this pleasure. How sick was she to think about Dru while making
love to Maxwell?

Randi thought about that now as she and Max walked along the water hand in
hand.

“What’s wrong, baby?” Maxwell asked, looking at Randi’s face. “Nothing,”
she answered, washing the look off her face and replacing it with a smile.
“Not important.” They stopped to look out at the water. Randi closed her
eyes as Max walked behind her, softly snuggling his body up to her, wrapping
his arms around her waist.

4) THE POETRY CORNER

@ The Poetry Corner, help us welcome a poet whose name belies the deep
penetrations and rhythms that his poetry evokes: UNKNOWN SILENCE!

When asked, "When did you first begin to enjoy the art of writing," Unknown
Silence replied: When I began, IN JOY, to enjoy the art of living. I've lived in
a world of self-created pain for lifetimes where I didn't understand it all and
it didn't make sense. Living and receiving the wisdom of my soul-journeys
has helped me realize that flowers blossom after the struggle through the soil.
There's a perfection in the process, a sweetness in the pain, and meaning in the
moments that eventually sculpt masterpieces. With this innerstanding and
awareness, I can now dive into a sharp pen without fear and become the "sweet"
scars carved on the skin of virgin parchment for others to caress. Yet, it is now
—always now— that I begin, over and over, to enjoy the art of writing.

Corner!

6) THE WRITE LIFE

In her latest THE WRITE LIFE article, Shon Bacon talks about how writers
need to FIND THE TIME TO WRITE!

::EXCERPT::

In late 2003, I was in a quandary. I was in my final year of an MFA program.
I was a graduate teacher. I was an editor. I was owner of an online magazine.
I was helping to develop academic textbooks. I was a long-distant friend and
sister, which meant I sent money I often didn’t have and spent long hours on
the phone helping and dealing with my loved ones’ issues. I was a million other
things, too.

The quandary?

I couldn’t find time to write. Before this moment, I was one of the students
who always had an arsenal of work at the ready for fiction workshop. Now
that I had a 200+-paged thesis due a few months into 2004, it became hard
for me to find the time to write. When I told my fiction professor, he said,
“If you can’t find the time now to write, you won’t find the time to write when
you graduate.” I laughed. At the time, I thought, “When will I ever be ALL of
these things…at once…again?”

Up Close & Personal with Author Niambi Davis

In 50 words or less, make us want to read your debut novel FROM DUSK TO DAWN.
Their first meeting was as explosive as lightning on a hot summer night. Taliban wannabe? Bible-thumping crusader? Now those are fighting words! If Bilal and Ayo can’t manage a civil conversation, how in the world can they fall in love? And when it finally happens, can they overcome the greatest challenge of all?

THE CALL! Describe for us the moment you learned your book was going to be published by Parker Publishing.
The call was actually an email, and when I read it, no words could come out of my mouth. Think beached fish or seizure victim. I read it over and over again until I could quote each word verbatim. It’s still in my “keep as new” email folder.

How has your life changed since getting your book deal? Has it changed?
I’m still getting used to the fact that I’m the author of a published novel. And the look on the faces of friends and family when I tell them I’ve written a book. Most of all, I consider the timing as divine order. My husband passed away in December. I knew I had to fill my days; a whole lot of idle time would not be a good thing. Instead, there are hardly enough hours to work on the promotion of From Dusk to Dawn. I’m blogging, trying to figure out what the heck to do with MySpace, planning for promotional items, doing podcasts and internet radio. For that “busyness”, I am so grateful.

It’s always important, in my opinion, for aspiring writers to learn of the “journey to publication” from published authors. Talk to us about your initial journey of writing FROM DUSK TO DAWN and finally having the book published. How long did it take you to get a book deal upon the book’s completion?
In another interview, I used the words “long and winding.” I started the story in a writing class. In the beginning, I was totally clueless. Why else would I pitch what was a total of three chapters to an agent? For more than two years, however, I was fortunate enough to write for the confessions magazines. Writing three or more stories a month was serious on-the–job training. Over time, my manuscript was rejected and revised, rejected and revised again. I kept at it until I finally I came up with the version that was accepted by Parker Publishing.

Click the cover above to order YOUR copy of FROM DUSK TO DAWN today!

What’s your favorite thing about FROM DUSK TO DAWN?
Love in its many manifestations – not always perfect love, and sometimes misguided by fear, but love nonetheless. It’s love between a man and woman, and strong, unbreakable love between family members. It’s the lengths to which characters are willing to go and the sacrifices they’re willing to make, all in the name of love.

What are three adjectives that best describe YOU?
For that question, you’ll need enough words to play an all-night game of scrabble. It depends on the day you ask, and I say that will a big helping of laughter. But most of all, I would describe myself as loyal, low-key, and fun-loving. (Even if the last two appear contradictory)!

How do you spend your time when you’re not writing?
This whole writing thing began with reading, and I’m still an avid reader. For a long time, I’ve been involved in the history of both sides of my family, although genealogical research is at the bottom of the “to do” list for now. Recently I’ve discovered scrapbooking, and I’m afraid I’ll end up in some kind of support group for recovering paper addicts. I love boats and the water, and whenever I get an opportunity, I go sailing.

Niambi Davis: The Soundtrack. What three songs would make it onto a soundtrack of your life?
Only three? Well, I’d have to include “Dance, Dance, Dance” (Chic), Hero (Mariah Carey), and Hot Fun in the Summertime (Sly and the Family Stone.) Summer is my favorite time of year, and this song is a classic summer anthem.

Watch the trailer for FROM DUSK TO DAWN now!

Do you have a standard process to your writing? Are you an outliner or a jump-right-in writer?
Definitely jump right in. I have tried outlining, and it worked to a point, but in the very rough beginning, I have to write it in longhand and let the plot fall where it may. Only afterwards can I put some order to the story.

Word association: What comes to mind when you see the following words:
Writing: Mandatory
From Dusk to Dawn: Joy
Publishing: Unpredictable
Ayo & Bilal: Fear and Love
Niambi Davis: Gratitude and Peace

What advice would you offer aspiring-to-be published authors?
First and last - be patient, open to constructive criticism and persevere. Take any good opportunities – they’re often stepping stones to something greater.

What is one big thing you’ve learned about the industry since receiving your book deal?
I used to believe that the writer was involved in every step of the publication process, but I’ve found the exact opposite to be true.

Dream-on: FROM DUSK TO DAWN: THE MOVIE. Who would play Ayo and Bilal?
Keith Hamilton Cobb would have to play Bilal, especially if his skin was a darker brown. If you’ve seen the series Andromeda, the reason is obvious! For Ayo, Kimberly Elise would be my choice. She has the “look.”

What projects are you currently working on?
Next up is a historical – I’ve finally let go of the research phase – it’s easy to get lost in that part of the process. It’s the story of a young black woman in 18th century England who finds love halfway around the world. In her words, she’s had a taste of love and of freedom, and she’ll risk everything to get it back. Then there’s the story of a woman accused of burning down her own home. She flees to the British Virgin Islands where she owns a beautiful 50-foot catamaran, but she’s still got to make a living. She works as a luxury charter captain while trying to find out who framed her and why. A character from Dusk to Dawn plays a major role in this one.
