Talking VENUS ENVY with Author Shannon McKelden

Your debut novel is VENUS ENVY, which by the way, is a GREAT title. If you had 50 words or less to pitch VENUS ENVY and make us want to run out and buy it, what would you say?
What happens when a fairy godmother has a quota to meet and runs up against the most stubborn Cinderella she's met in 2000 years? It's looking like bribery with chocolatinis and trips to Tiffany won't even be enough to help Venus accomplish this Extreme Love Life Makeover!

How has your life changed since getting your book deal? Has it changed?
You know, it really hasn't changed that much. Except that writing is harder...more pressure, I guess. More fear that I only had one book in me (even though, logically, I know that's completely ridiculous!). I still have to taxi kids around, do the laundry, and scrub the bathrooms. On the other hand, I think I really have a sense of accomplishment that I didn't have before. I really feel like I succeeded at something I can be proud of.

From the time you finished VENUS ENVY, how long did it take you to get an agent and subsequently, the book deal?
I actually had my wonderul agent, Deidre Knight, of The Knight Agency, before I wrote VENUS ENVY. We'd shopped around two books before VENUS and had some close calls, but hadn't sold. I finished VENUS, I think, in January or February of 2005, she started shopping it around in March, and by mid-May, we had our sale. It seemed to take forever at the time, but when it was all over and done with, it seemed like time had just flown by!

What's your favorite thing about VENUS ENVY?
The character of Venus without a doubt! I actually came up with the title VENUS ENVY before ever writing the book. I'm horrible at coming up with titles, and when this one popped into my head, I decided I HAD to write a book to go along with it. So, I asked myself, Who is Venus and why would someone be envious of her? From there, the character of Venus Cronus just blossomed. She was so much fun to write, always had her own opinions, and, truthfully, says a lot of things I wish I could say aloud myself. I saw the potential for a continuing character in Venus, and hope that still happens in the future!

What are three adjectives that best describe VENUS ENVY?
At the risk of using an overused word, I think Snarky is a great one. Funny is another. And, I think maybe surprising to some people, I'd call it Touching. Venus, as well as the other main character, the Cinderella of the story, Rachel Greer, both have a lot of growing to do...and I think both of their stories are very touching.

What are three adjectives that best describe YOU?
Me? Yikes! Um, Friendly? Optimistic? Oh, and to be completely truthful, Disorganized. :-)

How do you spend your time when you're not writing?
Well, I have a day job as a medical transcriptionist, which I've been doing for about 18 years. I've also been married for almost 22 years and am a mom to two great kids. I love to read in my spare time, too, like most writers.

What three tracks would make it onto a soundtrack of your life?
Do I really have to pick from the 4700+ songs on my MP3 player?! Really, I have no idea how to answer this one. It all depends on my mood. One day I may feel that the soundtrack to Phantom of the Opera fits best, another day I'm more hip with the top 40, and another day feel like getting soulful with singers like Norah Jones or India Arie. I truly cannot pick particular songs that would play as my life's background music!

Do you have a standard process to your writing? Are you an outliner or a jump-right-in writer?
I'm definitely an outliner...but I will also go with the flow. I tend to write out pretty detailed outlines (like 20-30 pages), but I'm completely willing to change things or move things around if necessary when inspiration hits. I've discovered if I at least know how it's going to end, I can get through the story. I once tried to write more by the seat of my pants and plotted out only the beginning and middle of the book. That was a complete disaster, as I knew nothing about the end except that I wanted a happy ending, so I was stuck at about the 3/4 point for months! It was horrible. I'll never do that again.

Word Association. What comes to mind when you see the following words:
VENUS: Confident and cocky, yet vulnerable.
LOVE: A real, tangible thing that can heal most any wound.
WRITING: A frustrating, maddening passion.
RACHEL: Cautious, longing for what feels like the impossible.
SHANNON MCKELDEN: Needs to get her rear in the chair and her fingers writing again. (Hey, you asked!)

What advice would you offer aspiring-to-be-published authors?
The tried and true advice of "don't give up." And, I think that applies to published authors, too. You really have to renew your faith in yourself and your writing every single day...even when the book sales are light or the next contract is slow to come. Once you give up, you are assured of failure, so just don't give up!

What is one big thing you've learned about the industry since receiving your book deal?
One thing? Actually I've learned a lot, but if I've learned anything about the industry specifically, it's that the timetable of the publishing business is unlike the timetable of any other business that exists. I think they exist on football time...lots of timeouts, moving in fits and starts, "15 minutes" on the clock lasts 2 hours in reality. I think my non-writer friends and family have the hardest time with this concept when they ask, "What's going on with such and such?" and I really have no answer for them, because I'm still waiting on New York.

Dream-on: You've just been told that someone wants to turn VENUS ENVY into a movie. Who would play Rachel, Venus, and Luke?
Venus is easy! I had a picture of a very sultry Portia de Rossi stuck to my monitor the entire time I wrote this book. All I had to do was look at it, and I could hear Venus's voice. For both Rachel and Luke, I had random pictures from magazines, without particular celebrities in mind. But, this is a great dream, so I'd have to say even though, looks-wise, Sandra Bullock doesn't fit Rachel, I definitely had her in my mind when it came to attitude and personality while writing the book. And how about Josh Lucas for Luke? Yum! He's got the calm sweetness about him that I loved about Luke.

What projects are you currently working on?
You know, I've spent the last year really floundering in my writing life. I had changed some of my reading habits and began to read books that are in what has been a really hot subgenre. Hoping to jumpstart a slow-moving career, I decided I should be writing what I most enjoyed reading lately...only to discover that, as a writer, what you love to read may not at all be a good fit for your voice. It took me most of this last year to come to grips with that. I have worked on some YA that fits my voice really well, and came quite close to selling, but again...not quite. I'm now really looking to get back to being true to myself and my writing voice. I'm working on some women's fiction with, of course, romance as the heart and soul of it. I'm becoming more honest with my writing, too, I think, and hopefully that will bring good things in 2008!

3) FEATURE

Here @ SD Features, we are premiering a new online saga: LOVE
BYTES. For those of you who enjoyed THE MISADVENTURES OF A SBF,
we have all nine episodes online for your perusal @ SD Features.

NOW - What is Love Bytes, you ask. Here's the skinny: Meet
Destiny, a twenty something love columnist - who knows absolutely
nothing about love. Her last boyfriend, well he was actually
the fiancé, broke up with Destiny while in the middle of planning
their wedding, and since then, Destiny has been battling depression.
Meet Devon, the sports editor at the paper Destiny works at. He has
been hot on Destiny's trail since the first time they met, but she's
always rebuffed his advances. Mainly because she knows he's a playa
and likes "conquering women" as she hears around the water cooler.
Destiny's tough veneer melts when she meets a guy online who seems
to make her think - on all levels, including sexually. When Destiny
starts to also feel something for Devon, will she have to choose
between what's real and what's cyberreality?

In Episode One, we met Destiny and caught a glimpse into her life
as a love columnist, her want of a new love, and the issues that
keep her from getting that new love.

In Episode Two, Destiny and her cousin Sharay head out to a club to
see some strippers...and for Destiny to meet her cyber man, but what
she gets in return is beyond her imagination!

NOW, in EPISODE THREE, Destiny can't get Devon's sexy dance out of
her head, and now, she can't get him out of her home as he pays her
a surprise visit full of food, talk, and kisses!

::Excerpt::
Destiny smiled in her sleep. In her dream she was happy. Totally
happy. She didn't know what she would need to be that way, but she
defined HAPPINESS as freedom, lightness. In her dream, she was
working, doing what she loved -- the column, and she had a man, a
man who loved her and awakened things in her that she had thought
was lost. The ironic thing about it was that the man in her dream
was Devon. She didn't toss and turn over this; she actually smiled
more and whispered his name over and over.

She jolted when she heard a loud continuous knock at the front door.
Jumping out the bed, Destiny stumbled to the front door, wiping her
eyes and opening it with her free hand. "Ray, what the hell are you
doing..." Her voice caught in her throat. It wasn't Sharay unless
she was a tall, dark, handsome, sexy man, holding a white paper bag,
and a smile as wide as a canyon. His eyes appeared to careen over
every crevice of her body.

Destiny was so shocked to see him that she forgot that she was only
wearing a short tee and a pair of thongs. "Good morning," Devon
crooned, holding out the bag, his eyes still pierced against
Destiny's body. "I thought I would bring you some breakfast, maybe
we could talk."

"Uhhhh," Destiny stuttered, shaking her head, bringing her back to
the here and now, and how now her butt was hanging all out for Devon
to see. She stepped back, opening the door, and allowing Devon to
enter. She reached up and grabbed her trench coat from the hook on
the back of the door. Tossing it on, she continued to shake her
head, and moaned, "Be back."

Destiny ran into her bathroom, running the shower, and quickly
stripping and showering. "What is he doing here?" she cried out.
"And my butt all hanging out, and him drooling all over the place,
and..."

In episode #11 of Everything's Gonna Be Alright: Clemson comes
clean with Tre about Brady, and Cassie - while wondering what's
behind her husband's explosive confrontation with Clemson - meets
a man at work who wants to take her out...

NOW, in episode #12: Clemson and Cadu hang out for a little
sisterly bonding about the men in their lives..

::Excerpt::

A sad spell moved across Clemson’s face as she reached for her
fork and took another taste. “Just when things were starting to
look hot between me and Tre, Kat calls and he runs out after her.”

“Damn.” Caduceus began to dig into her plate.

“My sentiments exactly,” Clemson said, as they both began to eat.

After several minutes of peaceful eating, Clemson’s eyes shot up
towards Caduceus. “Oh,” she said, her voice in a whisper. “I
didn’t tell you the most crazy thing.”

“And what would that be?”

“Nothing serious, just that Tre told me he loved me.”

Caduceus fork hit her plate. Clemson would have laughed at the
open mouth look Caduceus had, if the situation wasn't so serious.

“You are lying to me, girl,” Caduceus said.

“If I’m lying I’m crying, and you can see there are no tears
falling.”

“When did he say this? What did you say?”

“It was last night, as he was leaving. He kissed me and told me
that he loved me.”

Caduceus’ right hand fell to her heart as she just about swooned
back into her seat. “And what did you say?”

“I didn’t say anything,” Clemson said. “I really didn’t get a
chance. He said it and left and I was just sitting on the floor
in disbelief.”

“Wow,” was all Caduceus could muster.

“I know, right? But I don’t know if I believe him.”

“What?” Caduceus asked, incredulous. “You know men don’t use that
word loosely.”

“I know, but he could have been saying it to pacify me because he
left to help Kat out.”

“I highly doubt that,” Caduceus said.

“Whatever the case, all I know is that he said it and now he’s
at the house with Kat fawning all over him.”

“Well, we’ll just have to get your butt back soon so you can watch
yo’ man.”

4) THE POETRY CORNER

TNC has always provided itself in showcasing talented poets, and
this issue is no different. We give MAD PROPS and LOVE to one
of our fave poets, LATORIAL FAISON, who is our Winter 2008
Spotlight Poet.

When asked WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO WRITE, Latorial replied:

Life inspires me. Every single day, every single thing that
happens in my life and our world inspires me to take to the words,
phrases and syncopation of poetry. I write about my own experiences
as well as those world class shots and images of what's happening
in our world every day. From war and politics to communities,
schools and relationships . . . I am captivated by what does and
does not happen in the world. I am inspired to write to promote

awareness. I write to take a stand. I write to inform. I write
to persuade. I write to encourage. I write to ignite and to
inspire. I write for so many reasons, but it call comes back to
that one word . . . life. If I write about Hurricane Katrina,
that's life. If I write about politicians, pimping or babies
having babies, that's life. I don't know how to write any other

experience, and I get the feeling that I help, even if just a
little bit, to make the world a better place. I seek to enlighten
and to open blind eyes to so many things. But the truth of the
matter is that I write life.

Corner!

ChickLitGurrl - GUEST BLOGGER @ Keyboards on Fire - Check It Out!

Today, I do my first guest blogging stint over at authors Samara King and Moira Reed's blog, KEYBOARDS ON FIRE, and I talk about a topic that is near and dear to my heart...a time-honored tradition that every writer must face: REJECTION. Do we flee when we receive rejection upon rejection, or do we stand and fight and perservere, wanting to achieve our literary dreams?

Read my take on it at Keyboards on Fire (http://keyboardsonfire.blogspot.com/) and LEAVE A COMMENT...LET ME KNOW YOU STOPPED BY!

Hot, Sexy, Tantalizing - And We're Not Just Talking about Author Samara King

We want you to make us NEED to buy your latest work - FLIRTING WITH DANGER! Pitch it to us in 50 words or less!
Arieona “Aries” Roman is hot on the trail of a thief when her Blood Luna diamond is stolen! She travels to the Caribbean to seek out the perpetrator, never!

Quentin's life as a Seastnan forced him to battle between his loyalty to his Nation and the one thing he’s desired most: Aries. Will his desire to possess her body and soul blind him as evil strikes?

What are three adjectives that describe the writing you have done so far?
Sexy. Diverse. Character Driven.

What are three of your guilty pleasures?
People watching, watching CSI and eating bbq potato chips.

I know that your works are published electronically. Can you talk to us about the process in which you work with your e-publishers (contracts, deadlines, etc.)?
I usually submit a project via email with a short blurb, world length and genre description. The response time depends on the publishing house. Once the project is accepted, you are notified and an editor assignment is usually done shortly after. The publishing date depends on the production schedule. Deadlines are usually established once the editor assignment is placed. Contracts vary; however, the houses I publish with are one to two years, royalties are either paid monthly or quarterly at 35% or higher.

As an e-writer, you and your works really do live in Cyberspace. How do you use the internet in order to market and promote your work?
MySpace and writing communities are essential to getting the word out about my books. I utilize them to the fullest as well as networking w/ other authors.

How are you looking to use it in the future?
I have several contests coming up and surprise projects.

What is the hottest work you have out to date, and what makes it so sexy?
I would have to say, Flirting With Danger. Every character got it on in the book except one. LOL. The attraction between the main characters, the angst they experienced on the path to love all intensified the sensual nature of the story.

Do you have a standard process to your writing?
I’ve learned over the course of the last year that it doesn’t hurt to switch up writing routines. I’ve gone from a fast writer to a snippet writer and back again. LOL. Nothing is written in stone when it comes to my writing practice.

Are you an outliner or a jump-right-in writer?
I’m in ‘in-betweener’ depending on a project and the length determines if I need to be more in depth with the plot development. I typically don’t like outlining, but I’m finding it necessary for my longer projects.

Why do you think you're so into writing steamy, sexy stories?
I’ve always written sexy stories. I love the involvement between characters and to see how they dare deal with the object of their lusts. It keeps things interesting.

Do you think you'll ever tap into other genres? If so, which one(s)?
I think I will. I like diversity. Chick-lit would be fun. It’s like having your say and slipping into a character.

Who are some of your favorite music artists to listen to when in the writing mood and why?
Jill Scott, Floetry, Leela James, Faith Evans, Corinne Bailey Rae and Chrisette Michele. I call them “my girls” LOL. They all have songs that speak universally and about life, love, ups and downs and help me to delve into emotional intense scenes.

What is your favorite thing about e-publishing? What's the thing you wish would be better?
I love the freedom I get from writing ebooks. I’ve never felt pressured to write one specific thing. I don’t feel that there is anything that can be better as ebooks have expanded in all markets.

If you could pick your three favorite movies that suggest the steamy, sexy goodness in which your stories exude, what would those movies be?
Thomas Crown Affair, Love Jones, and anything with Mr. Denzel Washington.

How do you spend your time when you're not writing?
Spending time with my son, watching movies, dancing, and singing.

What are three adjectives that describe YOU?
Eccentric. Creative. Independent.

Dream-on: You've just been told that you can have one of your stories made into a movie. Which story do you choose, why, and who would play the romantic leads?
Pulse, because I love romantic suspense storylines. Kerrie Washington would play Cassidy and Boris Kudjoe as Gabriel Sebastien.

What projects are you currently working on?
Currently, I am working Black Silk, an African American Vampire romance. The Panty Affair, and several other novellas and a single-title (tentatively) Captured.

DARE to Know Indie Filmmaker, TV Host, and Author, Abiola Abrams!

There are so many things I want to ask, so I will just jump right on in - you are the host of BET's THE BEST SHORTS, which airs on BET-J, Sundays, 8 p.m., Tuesdays, 9 p.m., and Thursdays, 11 a.m., EST. How did you get involved with the show?
With all TV and film jobs, you generally interview and audition. My two amazing producers Sean Joell Johnson and Ralph felt that as a working indie filmmaker and former actress with an MFA in Film Arts, I had the energy, fun, and background that their audiences were seeking. Being that my work is about empowering folks culturally, politically, sexually, and emotionally, it was a good match. We had some great theme shows this season with topics like AIDS and HIV, homosexuality, women directors, kid-centric films, Brooklyn themed movies, dramas, comedies, etcetera.

It's not surprising that you'd be the host of THE BEST SHORTS, considering that you are an indie filmmaker of some pretty complex works that can be viewed on your website (will provide link and mention a few of the shorts). What are some of the themes you find yourself exploring in your movies?
As I said, my work has been primarily about empowering women politically, sexually, and emotionally, so all of my work falls in these areas. Some of my films are pretty edgy, but as an artist, I feel that if you are not ruffling any feathers, you might not be saying anything new. I’ve shot mini-movies, also called shorts, as well as documentaries. The themes and topics range from mental illness to beauty to erotic themes. I enter each project kind of as a reporter or investigator. I have a naturally inquisitive mind, so I approach everything that I do with the standpoint, hmmm… What do I have to learn in this area?

You mentioned on your website that part of the reason you began making movies was that as an actress, you were turned down for roles because you were too dark. Since you began hosting THE BEST SHORTS and your debut novel DARE has dropped, is anyone biting to snag you for a film?
A few people have approached me, but I haven’t found the right offer yet. I am open to the possibilities. I’ll let you know if anything good comes across my desk!

Because you mentioned the "color" issue, I have to ask your opinion; do you think color is still a major issue in both acting and directing? How do you think we can begin to overcome that issue?
Because I am such an idealistic person, Shon, it hurts me to have to say yes, there is still a skin color issue in terms of casting for African American projects. However, we can’t get into blaming others or making excuses for their fears and inadequacies. As Bill Duke says, what we blame, we empower. But yes, there is still definitely the feeling in our culture that blackness is ugly and unappealing. Many people told me that BET would never hire me to host a show because I am dark brown skinned, but they did because I went into my interview knowing that I am unstoppable. I think that people like you and me begin to overcome this issue by addressing it in our own art—our own films, book covers, etc. The main character of my novel DARE is a chocolate sister named Maya and her best friend Athena is light skinned with blue eyes, so I am showing love to the range of our beauty.

How are you using your indie film work to help further your career?
Shon, I attempt to be an artist in all I do. So that’s where I approach things from. I once had an opportunity to talk to Melvin Van Peebles. The man is a living legend. He writes music, films, books --- and novels in French! I asked him how does he know whether something should be a song, a book, or a film. He told me to let the project tell me what it should be and I have approached my work like that ever since.

So, we know you've acted...we know you're a TV host...we know that you're an indie filmmaker...and NOW we know are you an author because your debut novel, DARE is out! Tell us a bit about DARE...
Dare was fun to write and people have been telling me that it’s big fun to read. Just yesterday this woman said that she was so annoyed that she had to go to work because she wanted to just finish the book, and someone else told me that they keep thinking about the characters afterward. That is big compliment! Dare is a motivational and inspirational story, but it’s also romantic comedy, about a young woman who strives to be more than she is. Maya has a dead end job at the beginning of the novel and feels like her life is going nowhere. She finally makes some courageous decisions that set things off on a different course, and then her life gets out of control. She is a good girl who has to go a little bad in order to find herself. People can find more at the interactive website www.daretogetalife.com.

What is DARE'S backstory?
Maya Hope is a brainiac who is bored out of her mind in a dead end job. Her best friend Athena dares her to ask herself what she would Dare to do if she could not fail. In trying to answer this question, she fails again and again, miserably. Someone called Dare a black Bridget Jones Diary. I think that is a good description because we are definitely laughing and crying with her the whole way as we delve into her blogs, notebooks, and experiences.

How did the opportunity to publish DARE come about?
I have been a writer my entire life. One of my film projects enabled me to have a literary agent who then shopped the project for me and Selena James of Simon and Schuster’s Pocket Books division won a bidding war to pick up the story.

What type of writer are you? Do you prefer to outline, or do you like to jump right in and let the pieces fall where they may?
I am an extremely organized writer so for me outlines are critical. I plot everything out as best I can before I start writing. I work with bulletin boards of inspirational images, index cards of details, and character profiles and outlines.

What's your favorite thing about DARE?
There’s so many – wow, that’s a hard question. I really like the fact, Shon, that the book is divided into motivational segments by the lessons Maya learns: Harmony, Joy, Love, Beauty, Truth, and Moxie. Each section gives affirmations and homework so that readers can learn Maya’s life lessons along with her. I also love the fact that the book is about a flawed woman who is just trying to figure out life, like we all are.

What three adjectives best describe DARE?
Dare is fun, fearless, and inspirational.

What three adjectives best describe YOU?
Wow—okayyy. (giggling) Abiola is fun, fearless, and inspirational, too. At least I strive to be. I mess up sometimes, but I am human, so that’s ok.

How do you spend your time when you're not writing, directing, or TV hosting?
Sleeping! No just kidding. I love hanging with my friends, and I also enjoy scrapbooking. Geeky I know, but there you go. I also love a good movie, if I can shut up long enough to let the people with me enjoy it! LOL.

Do you have a philosophy to art, to why you do what you do within the artistic realm?
Everything I do is in the artistic realm, Shon. I guess that’s my theory, to aspire to be an artist in all I do, whether it’s interviewing someone on The Best Shorts, cooking, or dancing. Learning each day how to be more free and spread more joy. The doctor’s oath is do no harm, so I try to subscribe to that as well. Above all, do no harm, and try to leave my little corner of the planet a little better than I found it. Some people may disagree with some of my topics or my work, but I welcome the discussion. Bring it on!

To aspiring women writers, directors - what advice do you have to give them that push to achieve their goals?
Last year I had the opportunity to work with women filmmakers in Nigeria. Now, we think that we have issues? Shon, we are so incredibly blessed in North America, and we need to know that. Writer Virginia Woolf said around 80 years ago that in order to create women needed to have a room of one’s own, and that’s still true. What that means to me is to find a balance between family and kids, obligations, financial concerns, and everything else to carve out a little space and time just for you to do what makes your heart sing.

What projects are you currently working on?
Well, as you know Dare just hit stores, so I am looking forward to sharing it with readers. I am making myself available to book clubs that read the book to answer their questions, so that should be really fun. They can contact me through the site www.daretogetalife.com. We are also taking submissions for season 3 of BET J’s The Best Shorts. Info is on www.abiolaabrams.com or www.myspace.com/thebestshorts. In addition to my BET show, I am also going to be doing a daily online show called Planet Abiola on Blackplanet.com and other platforms. People can find everything on my website or hit me up at www.myspace.com/goddessfactory.

This was so much fun, Shon. Congrats on completing your book as well. Proud of you, sis!
