In the Spotlight with YA Author Diana Rodriguez Wallach

The Author

Diana Rodriguez Wallach’s debut young adult novel, Amor and Summer Secrets, is the first in a three-book series published by Kensington Publishing in September 2008. The second two books in the series, Amigas and School Scandals and Adios to All The Drama, come out in November 2008 and January 2009, respectively. Diana holds a journalism degree from Boston University, and has worked as a reporter and as an advocate for inner city public schools. She currently resides in Philadelphia.

You can find Diana all over the Internet: her website, her blog, her MySpace page, and on Twitter!

The Book

Fifteen-year-old Mariana Ruiz has no desire to step foot outside her affluent Philadelphia suburb. BUT she may not have a choice.

With total disregard to the high-glam Sweet 16 her best friend is hosting, Mariana’s father ships her off to a tiny mountain town in Puerto Rico to stay with family she’s never met. The heat is merciless, the food is spicy, and only one of her relatives—her distant cousin Lilly—speaks English. Her consolation prize is Lilly’s homespun Puerto Rican Quinceãnera. Only the riotously festive party exposes Mariana to more than just her culture. She uncovers new friends, her first love, and a family secret that’s been buried on the island for more than 30 years.

The Interview

Fill in the blank: "Writing AMOR AND SUMMER SECRETS was organic and very speedy."

AMOR AND SUMMER SECRETS is book one in a series you have coming out through Kensington - what was the spark that created this series in your mind?
The idea behind it developed during a phone conversation with my agent, Jenoyne Adams. She had mentioned seeing an increase in interest from editors seeking multi-cultural YA projects, and like any good agent, she asked the infamous question, “Got any ideas?” I didn’t. But by the end of our conversation, I pitched the story for what became Amor and Summer Secrets.

My goal was to feature a character with a background similar to my own—a girl who was half Puerto Rican and half Polish, a girl who grew up not speaking Spanish, a girl who didn’t look like the Latina stereotype. Many of the feelings Mariana expresses about her cultural identity are similar to the questions I faced growing up.

She was a lot of fun to write about, and I was thrilled that Kensington gave me the chance to expand upon her story with two more books—otherwise how would find out what happens when Mariana gets back from Puerto Rico, meets a new boy, throws her own Sweet 16, and ends up at a frat party? Stay tuned for the sequels!

YA is huge - there are so many books on the market that feature girls having to spend what's to be their best summer away from home in a different place. There are a slew of books about best friends, new friends, and love - how do you make your series UNIQUE? How does it stand out from the pack?
I didn’t set out to write a “fish out of water” story. My goal for Amor and Summer Secrets was to offer a modern-day look at the reality facing many American teenagers who are torn between two ethnic groups. It doesn’t matter whether your half Polish and half Puerto Rican, or half Filipino and half Russian, people can relate to what Mariana is feeling.

But in terms of uniqueness, the novel also brings to light many secrets that would have stayed hidden in Puerto Rico had Mariana not taken that trip. It opens Mariana’s eyes to a side of her family she didn’t know existed, and I think many teens can relate to being kept in the dark about unpleasant family histories. Trust me, I know. I was the youngest. I practically lived in a bubble.

Do you think the multiculturalism is an aspect that helps to illustrate the series uniqueness?
Absolutely. I think it’s becoming rare to find many American kids who are 100% affiliated with just one ethnic group. And I find that many people, including myself, connect more to the culture that they “physically” resemble.

For much of my life, I had a hard time connecting to my Puerto Rican roots because I didn’t fit the stereotype. My picture’s posted here, take a look. Would you look at me and think “Puerto Rican”? But as I grew older, I chose to seek out those connections. I studied Spanish in school, took a semester abroad in Madrid, and visited my family in Utuado.

So I purposely sent Mariana on a journey that it took me much longer to take. After all, Mariana’s a smart cookie, I knew she could handle it.

Your publishing journey: once you completed AMOR AND SUMMER SECRETS, how long did it take you to find an agent and to receive a book deal?
I lucked out on the agent front. I only queried for two weeks (don’t hate me). I didn’t realize until much later how incredible lucky I was—not only to have skipped an incredibly demoralizing process, but to also land such an amazing agent right out of the gate—Jenoyne Adams.

The journey to find a publisher was much longer. My first novel, the one that landed me an agent, has yet to sell. But it still holds a special place in my heart (pitter pat)—I might one day release it on my website. I hear e-books are all the rage.

That said, when “Amor and Summer Secrets” did sell, it was quick. We submitted the manuscript to Kate Duffy at Kensington on a Thursday and by the following Tuesday, I got THE CALL.

It was Fat Tuesday. I was at Mardi Gras wearing beads and feathered mask. There’s a photo on my website of me on the phone during the exact moment that I got the news from my agent: [LINK].

It was awesome! I danced in parades and drank hurricanes the rest of the day.

What are THREE adjectives that best describe AMOR AND SUMMER SECRETS?
Fun, smart and engaging.

What are THREE adjectives that best describe YOU?
Creative, ambitious, and outgoing.

Diana Rodriguez Wallach: The Soundtrack: What THREE TRACKS would HAVE to go onto a soundtrack of your life?
Suddenly I See, KT Tunstall –It fits the mood I felt while chasing this writing dream.

Someone Like You, Van Morrison –It’s my wedding song. I’m cheesy like that.

One, U2 and Mary J. Blige –It might be my favorite song in the entire world (I wish I could sing like Mary J—oh, to dream), and it perfectly fits the theme of my new WIP. It’s pretty much my anthem at the moment.

We all know that writing for an author is only part of the journey - publicity soon follows. What are some things you're doing to promote AMOR AND SUMMER SECRETS?
You mean besides this interview? Hehe.

Well, I used to do PR for a nonprofit so I have some experience drumming up press. I’ve sent out several press releases, and I have some articles coming out in Main Line Magazine, Motivos Magazine, and Philebrity to name a few. I also threw a Book Launch Party for more than 100 people. And I was a panelist at the Baltimore Book Festival on Sept. 27th.

Plus I have book signings set up in October at stores in Philadelphia, the Philly suburbs, and Wilmington, DE.

I also created a fun book trailer. And I’m blogging and twittering, and I have accounts on MySpace and GoodReads. I keep very busy and truly empathize with every word in the YouTube sensation, “Book Promotion 2.0.”

Many people believe that good writers are also voracious readers. What are three of your favorite books, and why do they make the list?
I like to read every genre, so these were chosen at random merely because there are part of a select crop of books that I’ve read more than once.

Pride and Prejudice—I’m an Austen fan, and the first time I read this book I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I went out and rented all the movies adapted from it. I devoured Bridget Jones, which is loosely based on it. I didn’t want to let the characters go. I still don’t. And I love Colin Firth.

Twilight—I know many people are divided on the Twilight phenomenon, but I loved Stephenie Meyer’s debut novel. I stayed up late on my vacation, not wanting to put this book down (I chose reading it over the casinos). I love the characters she created, and they made me aspire to go deeper with my own.

Cider House Rules—I actually cried while reading the end of this novel, and I was sitting outside in Manhattan eating lunch on a workday. This book really made me think, and you can’t ask for much more than that.

Looking back on your writing journey, who has been one person that has inspired you the most in your literary aspirations? How has he/she inspired you?
My husband, hands down (he’ll be happy I said that). He’s my biggest fan. I literally dreamt the concept for my first novel, and when I told him about the dream, he didn’t laugh. Instead, he immediately reminded me of a psychic we had met years earlier who had predicted I would “write books, little books, like children’s books.” This was long before the idea ever popped into my head, and if my husband hadn’t reminded me of that story, I might not have been so determined sit down and write that first novel. I owe a lot to him—including the fact that I was able to quit my day job. Plus, he’s a great publicist and a thoughtful editor.

Word Association. What comes to mind when you see the following words:
FRIENDSHIP: Girls
AMOR AND SUMMER SECRETS: Awesome
TEEN: Steam (Teen Steam is Alyssa Milano’s 1980s workout video, I don’t know what made me think of that)
WRITING: Creative
DIANA RODRIGUEZ WALLACH: Author (How cool is that I get to say that now?)

AMOR AND SUMMER SECRETS: The Movie. Who would play Mariana Ruiz?
I love this question! Usually, I say Miley Cyrus so the film will make a bazillion dollars in its opening weekend! LOL.

But in all seriousness, this would be hard to cast. As I’ve mentioned, Mariana does not look like the stereotypical Latina. But I think for politically correct reasons, I’d have to cast a Latina in the role. So I would need a Cameron Diaz type, only younger and with red hair.

What's currently going on in your WRITING LIFE?
The sequels to the series, Amigas and School Scandals and Adios to all the Drama, will be released in November 2008 and January 2009, respectively. I’m very excited for those debuts!

Also, I’m currently working new YA project. It’s a complete departure from what I’ve done in the past—lots of spies, suspense, fight scenes and, of course, a love triangle. I get to travel for it because I’m setting some scenes in Europe, which is amazing. Also, the character is a lot of fun to write. She’s much cooler than me, all about girl power, and her dialogue is very punchy. I hope to have it ready for the publishing world soon!

In the Spotlight with Young Adult Author Paula Chase-Hyman

The Author

Paula Chase-Hyman doesn't mind being known as a Jane of all trades, Queen of none. But a single theme has followed throughout her career in communications—keeping her finger on the pulse of teen culture. From starting her own mentoring group at Annapolis Senior High School in '94 to coaching her Green Hornet cheerleaders to Grand Champion (ahem, twice), Chase-Hyman refuses to squash her inner teen diva. Luckily, her long memory for all things young led to a career writing young adult novels.

Now, watching an episode of The Hills or Zoey 101 is "research." At least that's what she tells her husband and daughter.

Come hang out with Paula at her website and her MySpace.

The Books

Mina Mooney is about to discover that when you're at the top, the only place to go is down...

It's springtime in Del Rio Bay, and everyone's heading to the O.C. to catch the varsity cheer squad compete at the Extreme Nationals. Everyone's pumped, especially Mina Mooney, because making the elite squad has finally gained her entrance into the Upper Circle. Mina's psyched for the big show—and some unsupervised cuddle time with Brian. Best of all, her number-one enemy, Jessica, has shocked everyone by calling a truce. But little does she know that Jessica's peace offer is nothing more than a disguise for what she really has in store for Mina...

Spring break means all sorts of trouble for Mina's friends, too. Lizzie, whose focus has never strayed from the books, is boy crazy for the first time in her life. Kelly's decision to give ex-hustler Angel another chance just might backfire. And Jacinta is having a hard time breaking things off with Raheem—even when he does something utterly unforgivable.

Fun, fast-paced, and impossible to put down, That's What's Up! proves that when it comes to popularity, you better watch your back.

Coming October 28, 2008

Mina Mooney has a new worst enemy—her best friend...

Summer is just around the corner, but things are already too hot to handle in Del Rio Bay. For the first time ever, Mina doesn't have a master plan to keep her popularity roller-coaster on track. She's so sprung over Brian that she's having a hard time just thinking straight. So, she's not at all ready when her best friend Lizzie makes their clique swear to a year-long virginity pact...

Now Mina and her crew are feeling way too much heat. Kelly is glad to take things slow with cute jock Greg—but ex-hustler Angel isn't about to let her go drama-free. For Jacinta, a missed period and Raheem planning "their" future together is promising nothing but trouble. And when Lizzie finds out Mina has "betrayed" the pact, it's a head-to-head, no-holds-barred showdown that could say hasta la vista to the clique for good.

Fresh, funny, and always on-point, Who You Wit'? is all about trying to keep it popular when things get all too real.

The Interview

I see the title of your latest book - THAT'S WHAT'S UP! - and instantly I feel attitude, like something's about to pop off - is that the idea behind the title?
Yes, exactly. My titles are all about evoking some sort of emotional response. I love making them pop-culture oriented and having people think – Now what does that mean? Does it mean this? Does it mean that? That’s What’s Up! to me, is all about putting someone in their place or letting someone know the deal. And the character Jessica Johnson makes an appearance in this book and for those who have been reading the series, you know when Jess is around there’s always lots of attitude.

Fill in the blank: "I wrote THAT'S WHAT'S UP because I love giving my readers a peek into what’s happening with the Del Rio characters. Each book is like peering through a looking glass into their world at that moment. Although the books follow a chronological pattern, following them as they mature, each book covers only a small segment of their lives. This book remains their freshman year, but during spring break."

What themes, topics will readers find within the pages of THAT'S WHAT'S UP?
That’s What’s Up! is all about frenemy’s, forbidden relationships and making choices about who we call friend.

There are a lot of YA novels out - and a slew of series; what makes your series unique?
When I wrote So Not The Drama in 2003 there were no books out there like it. “like it” as in having an African American lead character from the suburbs with a multi-racial cast surrounding them. Even now, I’m hard pressed to name a book that offers those elements. You have teen lit where the characters are predominately white and rich or African American and poor and now you’re starting to see a few where the characters are African American and rich but those type of books keep the casts primarily homogeneous and place them on “extreme” ends of the economic spectrum – i.e. rich or poor. Where are the kids “in the middle?” My casts are diverse because the suburbs tend to be diverse and I focus on the ‘burbs because too often literature ignores that African Americans are middle class and suburban as well as our white counterparts. I’m a ‘burb girl and my books reflect the sort of environment I grew up in and the one my daughters are now being raised in. I needed to represent for the ‘burbs and my books tend to do that.

What are THREE adjectives that best describe THAT'S WHAT'S UP?
Fun, juicy, wild ride (okay, technically that’s four but…)

What are THREE adjectives that best describe YOU?
Passionate, focused, driven

THAT'S WHAT'S UP is book three in your Del Rio Bay Clique series; are more in the works?
Yes. I’m under contract for a total of five books in the series with an option for a sixth. Who You Wit’? will hit stores late October and Flipping The Script, May ’09. Right now, both have been written and submitted. So technically, right now I’m not working on any Del Rio Bay books, but that may change by year’s end.

INSIDE YOUR MP3: What THREE TRACKS are you loving right now and why?
Ooh tough because when it comes to faves it’s all about my mood. But the three songs I love right now, this very moment are:

Whatever You Like by T.I. – I love this jam. It’s the softer side of T.I. but still with his southern edge. I can’t listen to it without moving. It’s infectious like that.

Burnin’ Up by Jonas Brothers – Overall, I’m not loving the group and don’t entirely get the craze. But I have a 14-year-old and a four-year-old and they both love these guys. Burnin’ Up was the only track I heard and liked immediately. The guys tend to over-sing but it’s the cheesiness in the over-singing of this song that I adore. It’s what old folks would say is a catchy little ditty. LOL

Here I Stand by Usher – It’s the new and grown Usher and it’s nice. I don’t think this CD is getting the attention it deserves simply because Usher’s music has changed since he got married and became a father. But I hope he hangs in there and doesn’t do the R. Kelly thing – which is try to sing younger than he is. You can’t be 25 forever!

Now I feel bad because I didn’t give any of the female artists love. So I can sneak in a fourth and say I really like Mariah Carey’s I’ll Be Loving You Long Time? It samples an old Debarge jam, so I loved it as soon as I heard it, for that alone.

We all know that writing for an author is only part of the journey - publicity soon follows. What are some things you're doing to promote THAT'S WHAT'S UP?
Since I write a series, the bulk of my promotion took place during the release of the first two books. Once a series is out there, it’s sort of up to word-of-mouth and the books to help one another sell. And that’s happening. But each book still gets a little individual promo love. For That’s What’s Up!

I did a few fun things I’d never done before – I was on Personal Profiles, a television show run entirely by teens from a middle school in Montgomery County, MD. I was a guest panelist at the Romantic Times Convention in Pittsburgh, talking about YA romance books. I did two teen writing workshops at libraries in Baltimore County. And That’s What’s Up! was both a summer beach read pick for Teen Reads and Teens Read Too – websites that promote teen lit.

Many people believe that good writers are also voracious readers. What are three of your favorite books, and why do they make the list?
Writers are voracious readers unfortunately in my case it’s once was. The single most disappointing thing about being a writer, for me, is losing the time I used to have for reading. I honestly don’t have that luxury anymore because writing takes up a lot of time I used for relaxing or sleeping. However, my faves are:

Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor – The saga of the Logan family was one of my favorites as a Young adult reader. Ms. Taylor captured their joys and pains in a way that made me forget it was historical fiction, which typically I only read as required reading when I was younger. I had the pleasure of interviewing her for the Brown Book Shelf’s 28 Days Later campaign and I was like a fan girl crushing on one of those Jonas boys. LOL

Cujo by Stephen King – First of all, pretty much anything by Stephen King I’ll read. He’s my favorite author. But I chose Cujo because not too many authors can write a book partially from the perspective of the dog and pull it off! I’m thinking if I told my editor I wanted to write a book and it was going to be told by the dog in some parts she’d make me get some sort of counseling. That’s a tough thing to do and still have the book come off so scary you may need to sleep with the lights on afterward.

Time Line by Michael Crichton – Crichton sometimes comes off a little preachy in his books – I’m looking at you State of Fear. But when he does the thriller well, his books are page turners times ten. Time Line is about time travel, which right away you’re thinking ‘huh?!’, and these folks are transported back to Medieval times. Again, not too many writers could pull this off. But Crichton makes the concept feel believable. Seriously. After I read it I thought…okay, someone probably actually has found a way to do it.

Looking back on your writing journey, who has been one person that has inspired you the most in your literary aspirations? How has he/she inspired you?
Actually it’s three people who played a part in my literary aspirations - Mildred Taylor, Judy Blume and Francine Pascal. Mildred Taylor because she was the only African American author I recall reading on my own, without the teacher forcing it. Her imagery is so vivid you feel transported and I aspire to write that way. Judy Blume because I read her regularly – she was the author whose books I read the second they hit shelves. They were so real and honest – again, something I aspire to evoke in my books. And Francine Pascal because for me, she’s the queen of the modern day teen lit series. Her Sweet Valley High is why books like Del Rio Bay can exist.

THAT'S WHAT'S UP: The Movie. Who would play Mina Mooney, Jessica, Lizzie, Kelly, and Jacinta?
I can see KeKe Palmer playing Mina. I forget the actresses name and she’s a little old to play her now, probably, but the Latino actress in the Cheetah Girls. Not sure about Jacinta or Lizzie. On the face of it, a lot of today’s hot young white actresses like Miley Cyrus and Ellen Page seem too “big” to play Lizzie, who is a very low-key person unless she’s on stage. I think my books are a good venue to launch a career. Just like Harry Potter pretty much is Daniel Radcliffe’s career, for now, I can see my books doing that for a cast of young actors – giving them a start and the chance to mature into adult actors since there are five books.

What's currently going on in your WRITING LIFE?
My Del Rio books are finished, so I’m noodling on a new series. I conceptualized the characters and outlined the first book, the second I finished Flipping The Script. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to write outside of the DRB series because I’ve been doing it for five years now. But it was fun and refreshing to get into a new set of young people’s heads. My hope is to get it finished and put it out there to see who might be interested in my brand of literature. I’m determined to keep writing for those readers “in the middle.”

EXCERPT of OFFICE AFFAIRS

I spent a full day at the office with no thoughts of work on my mind. I flipped through the catalogues absent-mindedly. Nothing caught my eye. The only thing on my mind was sex. I needed to get laid in the worst way. LaDonna's advice about Davis was making more sense but I still wasn't sure I was ready for dinner with him. I thought about having coffee with him but to my surprise he hadn't asked me out in weeks. Some times when you snooze, you lose. With LaDonna and Ronald hitting it off so well, she had a better chance of getting laid than I had.

I drove home with my top back, letting the wind massage my tense body. If only I had a man to sit next to in my ride. I could really go for a Splackavellie right about now! I want to be naked in the passenger seat while my man drives me to a secluded area. I want my thick, ample thighs to feel the wind as he hits again and again, and again. That would be all good!

Squeal! I had to come to a screeching halt to avoid hitting the car in front of me. 'Get it together, Allysia.' I tell myself. If I keep thinking about sex, I'll be on the six o'clock news. It's a damn shame that a grown ass woman ain't getting it on the regular!

At home I park my Mercedes coupe in the garage and enter my big, empty house. I smell my dinner for the evening but there's no one to share it with. No man. No children. Even the workers are gone for today. I would invite LaDonna over but even she has a date. She and Ronald are really hitting it off. Even though he likes her as she is, I still owe that chic a makeover. I'm sick of the sailor dresses in every unimaginable color.

I headed up the winding staircase. If only Davis was up in my room waiting for me. The things I could do to that man. If only he would let me get my freak on without any strings attached. I'm not trying to hurt him or get my heart broken while being a puppet in a show called Love.

After a long, cold shower I plopped down on my king size bed. With nothing else to do, I reached for the remote. Wouldn't you know the first channel that popped up was an HBO channel? There was a couple going at it! I turned the channel quickly. Damn cable TV wasn't much better! I turned to the animal channel. I hoped that just maybe the crocodiles wouldn't be mating. Wrong! I turned to the animal channel only to see a species of animals I didn't even know, fucking the hell out of each other. Everybody was getting some except me. Frustrated as hell I turned off the TV and sent the remote sailing across the room.

Book Review: I Must Be in Heaven...A Promise Kept

The world today is so cluttered with tragedy - one tragedy being the death of marriages...of long, enduring forever love.

And then I read Valerie Anne Faulkner's true inspirational love story, "I Must Be in Heaven...A Promise Kept" and realized that in certain corners of the world, real love exists - the kind that's built on faith and commitment and that lasts through life's tragedies.

What I loved the most about Faulkner's story is her connection to her faith; it's so easy to have a tragedy befall you and you not be able to withstand it because your faith is being tested. Faulkner, with her faith and her love for her husband, was able to make it through a dark and scary journey. She was able to endure of heartache of her husband's medical trauma and persevere despite it. I also enjoyed Faulkner's down-to-earth tone. I could hear her voice through every story, every experience. I felt connected with her and her family as they connected and plowed through life's circumstances.

Faulkner's story, as I think all inspirational stories should do, made me reflect on my life, appreciate what I have, and rededicate myself to keeping God in my life and keeping my faith strong so that I can withstand the obstacles that I know I will face.

Book Review: An Exact Replica of a Figment of My Imagination by Elizabeth McCracken

It's easy to write a book about a baby's death; the minute we hear or read "a baby's death," the subject matter alone will evoke the stock emotions we know that come from something so traumatic - heartache, despair, tears, senselessness, depression...the list goes on infinitely.

What's not easy is writing that story in a way that gets at the heart of the true emotions beneath the ones we so easily rely on. What Elizabeth McCracken does so wonderfully in her memoir "An Exact Replica of a Figment of My Imagination" is unflinchingly real and will break your heart and make you hope all in one breath. It's not just the painful story of her baby's death; it's also the true, minute details of thought, of feeling, of reaction that most people don't talk about. It's not just the painful story of her baby's death; it's also the story of moving on yet holding on, of loving but learning to let go, of learning to accept the new beautiful things in your life (like the birth of a beautiful baby boy) while learning the ongoing process of forgiveness. It is the epitome of how LIFE GOES ON and how we should never forget what we've lost but embrace it, accept it, and take pockets of it for good memories to help us when the sadness and heartache invades.
